An historic farmhouse graces this oasis of calm set in a lush valley of the Swartberg Mountains where the atmosphere is conducive to quiet contemplation and communing with nature in an extensive permaculture garden and forest lined river surrounded by hills.

The space

Guest accommodation is spacious and comfortable with fans and fireplaces. Three spacious double rooms with en suite bathrooms are simply and eclectically furnished, opening onto the long front stoep with a captivating outlook over the farm. The kitchen lies at the heart of the house, and there are also sitting and dining rooms.

Guest access

It is open house and garden, while more adventurous guests may explore the entire farm and much of the surrounding area on foot.
Limited use of the kitchen is possible to make tea, coffee or to make use of refrigeration/freezer facilities.

Interaction with guests

My home is open to guests, courteous exchanges come naturally and mutual privacy is respected. I stay on the property in a converted barn and I am mostly available to help guests in any way that I can.

Other things to note

Delicious plant-based meals prepared using fresh organic produce from the farm (besides the inclusive breakfast) are available on request at extra charge.

Minimum two nights.

Beautiful surroundings - special and different. Gracious and generous host. A real oasis in the Klein Karoo. Our kids loved the animals (especially Rufus the cat and the giant tortoises) and splashing in the river. As noted in the description, these are guest rooms in an open house, so be sure to expect that. Excellent location when doing the Meiringspoort 21k.

The Tortoiseback Organic Farm is a oasis of peace, beauty and harmony. The abundance of the garden is amazing and the room is spacious and clean. Brett is a very conscious, respectful human / host and a great cook. I enjoyed my stay a lot and I hope to come back one day.

Here's a little poem to describe our stay at Tortoiseback farm. **** We had a lovely time, hiking up the koppie with the big dog bounding up ahead, bambi bringing up the rear, balanced rocks and beauty showing the way. We had a lovely time, napping on the green grass, by the lily dam, the clouds go by sending us either under blanket or basking. The best darjeeling tea golden in glass teapot out in the sun on the steps the history of the place three slices of farm baked ba na na bread Brett the vet and Beauty and roses welcomed us; we felt very welcomed. We had a lovely supper, followed by vegan home-made chocolate ice-cream with quince and conversation. We were looked after as carefully as individual pomegranates still on the tree, in paper bags protected from the birds. With surprises and wonderful things We had a lovely time.

Amber and Jesse were the kindest and most accommodating people we met on our trip! We had the most amazing vegan dinner and breakfast prepared for us and we ate it in our private farm style dining room. The location was peaceful and beautiful! There is an amazing vegetable garden that you can just get lost in. You can walk up the mountain and splash in the river all while beauty(the dog) happily follows along. Thank you so much the wonderful stay!

Brett is a very welcoming host and very accomodating. Room and bathroom are very large and comfortable. The place is very relaxing. I struggled to find the entrance but Brett installs a panel. And it will be great!

What a beautiful and peaceful haven Brett has created. A typical Karoo farmhouse with an interior tastefully furnished style shabby chic with modern paintings on the walls. I had a very nice bright room looking out into the garden, a magic garden of poetic .wilderness and sculptured shrubs. The little dam invites you to linger on the deck .Or you can sit under a majestic tree and sip your tea . I used it to do my morning meditations or Qi Gong. The organic vegetable garden is full of surprises and offers its abundance. In the evening it was nice to stroll down to the river, watch the geese coming home, then enjoy simple, deliciousl and authentic food from the garden while listening to beautiful classical or wild african music with magic candle light and having an interesting exchange with Brett. What more can you wish to make a stay successful! This wasn',t my first time and it won,t be my last. Thank you Brett for your hospitality,
