I stayed for 2 nights at Ma Ma guest house. Its location is good and on a quiet lane with no through traffic in an attractive leafy part of town. The three friends I was travelling with also booked rooms at the same time. We saw little of Su Nwe during our stay . Her mother welcomed us on our arrival and a young girl served us breakfast on the roof terrace with lovely views over the neighbourhood. My room was basic but spacious, clean, quiet and functional and there was a good sized shower in the bathroom with plenty of hot water .
I enjoyed staying in this guesthouse and the family were very welcoming. I was in Mandalay just for a short period of time and I appreciated the advice I was given of what to do and where to go. It was a lovely clean room and the owner facilitated a taxi share to the port the next day. The guest house is very used to sole travellers. You simply don't get this advice and support when you stay in bigger more formal places.
Accommodation was great and as expected. A short taxi ride into town but easy walking distance to the puppet show and the green elephant restaurant. Su nwe and her family were great. The young people they employ from the villages were a real joy, always smiling and helpful. Only slight downside was they were having work done on the building. It did not bother us as they didn't start work until we were up and we were going out for most of the day, but I think it should be mentioned if work is in progress when people book. All in all a great place to stay.
Really enjoyed my stay at Ma Ma's. Su and her mother were very helpful. They arranged a fabulous day trip in a shared taxi with one other guest. Breakfast was great and they provided a very substantial evening me for very low cost. They went to a lot of trouble to make sure my room was comfortable .
Hands down the best place I have ever stayed anywhere in the world. The hospitality and service truly way second to non and I've traveled all over the globe. I would be honored to stay there again if I'm able to make it back to mandalay. The room was clean and wonderful. It was also the first time I had true control over hot and cold water in the shower in all of Myanmar. 10/10 on all accounts !!!!
For all that Mandalay lacks in charm, Su and her family make up for in spades. We had great conversations and she was endlessly helpful. There is a family atmosphere, too, as Su's husband and niece also work in site. Her mom lives there too and it was nice meeting everyone. We also enjoyed Su's Burmese cooking for dinner, and a lovely Western breakfast spread with toast, fruit and eggs. Showers were HOT with good pressure and a quality shower head, and bicycle use was free. I would definitely stay here again.
I am learning the ropes of being a hotelier from my world renowned mother, Alice the owner of Peacock Lodge. Hope you have a pleasant stay with us. P.S. I am trying to learn the piano! If you happen to know how to teach me, I'll be a patient student.
