"The Shack", a comfy two bedroom fully equipped home sitting on the banks of the Steinhatchee River. Bring your boat and tie it to the dock, ready to launch to the Gulf of Mexico for fishing, scalloping, playing or enjoying beautiful sunsets.

Note, there is a separate rental agreement that requires acceptance and execution. There's also a procedures page that gives necessary information for the maximum enjoyment of the Shack.

The space

The Shack sits directly on the Steinhatchee River. It has a fully screened porch which surrounds the Shack on 3 sides. The Shack is equipped with everything you need. Bed Linens and paper products supplied. One bedroom is a king, the other, two singles and a trundle. The sofa makes into a double bed. Kitchen has everything. Central heat and air will keep the temp just as you prefer. A shower downstairs is ready to douse you after a full day on the Gulf. A washer/dryer is available. . A chain link fence surrounds the property.

Guest access

The private dock sits on the river front. There's a boat ramp directly across the river but it requires a trip into town. Another public ramp is available approximately 2.5 miles west. There's no pool but we enjoy a dip in the cool fresh river. Wear water socks. Swim at your own risk. We have seen an alligator before. Children should always be supervised on the dock, especially in the water. You will note there's a slide on the floating dock. Again, an adult should always be present if kids use the slide.

Interaction with guests

You will enjoy complete privacy at the Shack. It's great for families, couples, small groups who want to fish and play cards or individuals who seek to enjoy the quiet of the surrounding woods and river. It has something for everyone.

Other things to note

Your rental rate includes a 9% required Florida sales tax. There is an additional $125 cleaning fee. You will be asked for a security deposit which will be returned, $200, when you check out, assuming all is okay. Pets are allowed, usually, but I'll want more information. Bring your bug spray and flash light. You will need the flash light if you check something on the dock after dark. Bring drinking water. The Shack is on a well. Well water is fine for bathing and dish washing but we prefer to bring drinking water. Bring you own towels. Bed linens are supplied. A coffee maker is available but bring coffee and filters. A DVD is provided for movies. There is wi-fi and the password is near the television. A short application will be emailed upon acceptance for contact information. The application is not a contract.

First off we stay in Steinhatchee every year and normally in a higher end place. The prices were about the same except this place has a dock on the river. First we asked if we could check in early and we were told yes, when we arrived I contacted "Fred" via text with the #provided and asked for the gate access code. I received a reply back"sorry can't talk right now." So we called the house keeper which gave us the code. The house is a hodge podge of themes ranging from old cabin decor, 1970s, to psychedelic underwater with signs posted everywhere not to smoke or directions that were not disclosed in the advertisiment on the poor water quality and pressure for washing clothes, bathing etc. The dock is in OK shape with nails that are starting to protrude and the screen is all torn so it's pointless. We made the kids wear shoes since there is no urgent cares within miles for a tetnus shot. Previous guest have dumped scallops all on the rocks so the area just looked trashy. The first night we lost power and we tried to call the electric company with the number provided but you can't access or report cause you don't have a acct #, full name, or associated ph# for the acct. So we attempted to get into with the owners it took them a while to respond so we contacted the poor housekeeper again and she was quick to help us out. When the wife finally contacted us via phone it felt like she was upset that we bothered her. The night prior to leaving I received a text at 1015 pm reminding us that we need to be out prior to 11am since we checked in early.....ok....yes ma'am I read that in the detailed instruction packet that was emailed to me. Would I stay at this place again? No I feel for the amount they charge for 3 nights is the same as one of the higher end places in the area and the house is very outdated for the costly amount. It needs a water filtration system and wouldn't hurt to redecorate in one theme, also new screens on the porch and dock area to keep the nats off. The dock also needs some upkeep more for safety reasons. The housekeeper was great and willing to help each time we needed her I hope they keep her around.

Such a great place for two couples. I could keep my boat on the dock, which saved a lot of time each day. The house was clean, beds were comfortable, and the kitchen was great for cooking all the seafood we caught. We took a night cruise up the river one night and the stars were absolutely stunning! Milky way and all. No light pollution at all in that part of Florida. If you're looking for Florida mega resorts this is not the place. If you want to be in piece and quiet, and enjoy the beauty of old Florida, go to the shuck shack.

Response from Fred:
William, I was a little worried about Hurricane Hermine barging in on your last day at the Shack. Good to know you didn't have issues. Really cool that you enjoy the same things we do, the remoteness, the old Florida feel, occasional visits by neighborhood critters, most are friendly I might add... So glad you enjoyed our place. It's a little off the beaten path and tucked down a woodsy dirt road. We always see something different from before. Look forward to hosting you again. Thanks, Suzanne

Response from Fred:
Lawrence, sorry I am tardy in this reply... Bummer about the boat issues. Been there done that. Thanks for leaving the place in great shape. Now that you know how to find our little river front hideaway, come on back. Steinhatchee is just down the road from Atlantic Beach. Thanks for visiting us. The welcome mat is out for next time.
