About this listing
In beautiful, unspoilt Herefordshire Upper Newton Barn has views of the Welsh Mountains and is just 10 miles from Hay on Way, the famous centre for second hand books and home to the Literary Festival. For people who want to escape and relax!
Upper Newton Barn has been sympathetically converted with amazing light flooding into the open space. Relax in front of the woodburner whilst gazing out to the Welsh Mountains and enjoy the comfort of underfloor heating, a well equipped kitchen and some fabulous traditional board games to enjoy with a glass of wine late into the evening after an exerting day exploring Offa's Dyke.
The barn has two bedrooms. You will see in the photo that there are two staircases. One staircase leads to the smaller of the two rooms with a shower room adjoining. Up the second staircase is the master room where there is a free-standing bath and basin. Light floods in from the gable end window and this is allowed to fill the whole barn and give you a real sense of space. Bed is an important place in my book and I adore gazing out of the window feeling utterly comfortable in crisp white cotton bed linen, a goose down duvet and pillow on a Vi-Spring bed!
Despite being inside you feel remarkably close to all that goes on outside and no doubt the chickens will come trooping past the doors eating anything and everything that make their eggs exceptional and breakfast a feast to remember with their deep yellow yolks that taste like no other. If you would like to buy half a dozen they are £1.20.
There is a mature garden in front of the barn where on a sunny day you can pull out a deck chair and forget your worries where only the chickens will be able to disturb you...
Interaction with guests
Somebody will be around should you need anything but really, the space is for you to enjoy and feel that you can just do your own thing.
There are very free range chickens who have full access to all areas of the garden. Please be considerate to them if you have children. They don't like being chased!
You are restricted to the garden area directly outside the barn.
Enough wood will be provided for the Woodburner for one evening. If you need more wood there are several places in the area where you can buy a net of logs.
Please be respectful of the barn and leave it as you find it!

I was bought up in Herefordshire but have moved to quite a few different counties around the UK. And now I have returned. In my mind it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Particularly West Herefordshire which is far enough from easy motorway access to make it a place you go if you really want to get away. I adore the mountains where you can walk for miles without seeing a soul! But equally I love the independent shops and restaurants where you can find the most delicious local food, beautifully prepared by people who care about the community. Food has always been important to me and for quite a few years I was a food buyer, then decided to have a go at being a producer and made cheese and yoghurt for some years. Most recently I've been looking after bees. I find the traditional way of making things fascinating. I enjoy the slow pace of life and these old skills demand more considered time. I am at my happiest when my two lurchers are with me and we are outside enjoying the incredibly beautiful natural world around us.
