Description

The space

Castlewigg Lodge was originally a dower house built by Cpt. John Hathorn in 1830 for his then widowed mother, Anne. Enjoy the peace and tranquility, dark skies and a great night's sleep. Our large garden has seating, swings, hammocks and picnic benches. Close to visitors attractions, golf courses, coastal walks, fishing villages, tropical gardens, historic buildings and castles.
Our three en-suite guest rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryers and flat screen T.V.s.

Guest access

Snowdrop is our twin room on the ground floor, and has an en-suite shower. Single guests will be accommodated in this room. Guests have access to our large garden, and a guest dining room and lounge is available. During the colder months guests will enjoy their breakfast in the kitchen diner, and may wish to warm themselves beside our wonderful log fire! Please let me know if you have any special dietary requirements before you arrive.

Interaction with guests

My husband and I are very happy to interact with guests, or to leave them in peace if preferred! Though not licensed at present, we do have a lovely bar, where you may enjoy your favourite tipple if you want to bring it with you!

The neighbourhood

Castlewigg Lodge is located in a quiet rural location, but with easy access to the amenities in historic Whithorn, Wigtown and the Isle of Whithorn. The location is ideal for cycling, walking and there are opportunities for golf and fishing nearby. The Lodge makes an ideal base for exploring both the Rhins and Machars of Galloway and the Solway Coast.

Getting around

There are local buses which stop at the end of our drive, travelling towards Whithorn, Isle of Whithorn, Port William, Stranraer, Wigtown, Newton Stewart and Dumfries.

Other things to note

The Machars area of Dumfries and Galloway is perfect for cycling, motorbiking, there are opportunities for fishing and golf available nearby.
Please contact me to book Bluebell as a family room. The price for a family of three sharing Bluebell will be £75.
Prices are inclusive of a full Scottish breakfast!

House Rules
Check in time is 2PM - 10PM

I would be happy to discuss pet friendly arrangements, though furry friends are respectfully not allowed on furniture, and guests would need to provide their own pet bed.
There is a no smoking policy throughout the Lodge, although there is an area of the extensive gardens which we have designated for smokers to use.

Everything was lovely, very much as described. Pretty area, nice tidy room, helpful nice people, great food, flexible attitude. Dining and common room had a pool table, loads of books and CDs, tons of tourist and local info. Everything great, nothing out of place. I'd come back, and I recommend it to others. Good access to the Wigtown Book festival, and great value for this area.

Very highly recommended! I recently enjoyed a delightful stay with Anne and Bob while travelling on my own, staying for one week. By the time I left, I felt Castlewigg Lodge was my home from home. Both Anne and Bob are very friendly and generous and warmly welcomed me when I arrived (much later in the day than I expected). They are attentive, engaging and a mine of information on the the area (and more!). My single room was clean, fresh and very comfortable. Anne's cooking is delicious and I felt thoroughly spoilt with the choice of homemade and local produce. I have been to Whithorn/Wigtown a number of times and feel the Lodge is in a great asset to the area. I am already looking forward to my next visit!

I've been absolutely delighted. Anne & Bob are great hosts, we've been warmly welcomed and a lot of effort was put into making our stay as pleasant as possible. The house is big, it's located in remote area an the neighbourhood is very quiet - perfect for few days' getaway (check the guidebook link on airbnb, it's a nice trip planning helper). The room (with built-in bathroom) was very clean, you go in there and it makes you want to behave properly out of basic respect (the luggage mats are an awesome idea). It takes a while to get used to showers with separate switch but I've seen it in other places in Scotland too so I guess it's standard :) Towels, soap & shower gel, coat hangers... it's all available. Wide selection of tea & coffee, Anne was honestly interested in our trip & needs, she genuinely was doing everything to make us feel at home. Shame we could have stayed for only 1 day. The breakfast... absolutely massive selection. I thought I knew what to expect from "full Scottish"... I was wrong. Very tasty food topped up with good wholemeal bread and home made jam / honey... You will feel like you're being spoilt by your grandma! And last but not least - lots of good books on the shelves if you need to pass some time and simply relax.

An absolutely delightful experience. A warm and welcoming B&B nicely situated in a quiet location with a kind and considerate host. My room was clean and tidy and the bed extremely comfortable. With a spacious well appointed common area to relax and enjoy, plenty of parking space and easy access to both the coast and inland local attractions Castlewigg Lodge is ideal for exploring all that the area has to offer. Should you need advice on where to go and what to see you'll get it and, should you choose to indulge in Anne's cooked breakfast which is heartily recommended, you will be not be disappointed and truly be set for a day of exploring! I have no hesitation in awarding five stars to not only the accommodation and the location but also to the genuinely friendly couple who run it.
