Things to do :

Bicycle riding
The Rimutaka Cycle Trail has been named one of the world's hottest travel experiences for 2015 by travel guide Lonely Planet, it passes through York Bay. Our tenants usually ride the bikes to Eastbourne direction till the historic lighthouse on the hill or ride along the Hutt River towards Lower Hutt for the galleries and fair market during the Trail way.

Walks and Tracks
1. All of the tracks leading from the cottage are within the property and you can walk right down to the beach at Lowery Bay. On a Saturday morning, it is fun as you can buy fresh fish from a fishing boat that comes into the marina. The track at the base of the property is steep so take care. We have not made it too easy as we value our privacy and don’t want strangers wandering up from the road and stealing our plums.

2. The Regional Council has built walking tracks through the original park from York Bay to Lowery Bay and Days Bay. It’s about 1 hour to Days Bay. The tracks leave from the end of Kaitawa Road, the entrance is exactly in York Bay, where the treehouse is located. (See the brochures in the treehouse).

Good Swimming Beaches
Days Bay, York Bay and Eastbourne get the summer beaches.

Coffee & bars, galleries, shopping

Days Bay, Eastbourne, Petone or Lower Hutt all have their own charming attractions, check them online, you will find all the details.
The nearest shops are at Days Bay, Eastbourne, Petone or Lower Hutt. The Eastbourne village, which is about 4 km away does have a small supermarket and associated shops and restaurants. It also has an ATM machine. It’s a nice place. Petone’s main street, Jackson street is also interesting. Lower Hutt has a mall if that is what you need.q

Other things to note
* The cottage is attached to but closed off by locked double doors and shutters from a new wing that we have built below the cottage. The double doors and solid shutters mean there is no noise transmission between the two wings. We use the new wing as our part time home but are often away. The two wings are completely private one from the other and each has its own private deck and separate access.
* Dogs are sometimes tolerated but it must be understood that the site is not fenced & we have a one-off (not per night) dog cleaning fee of $30. If you gain our approval and bring a small dog you can pay this fee in cash. It must also be understood that the dog must be kept off the beds & soft furniture. If your dog is not trained to do this we would suggest you not rent this cottage. Large dogs are not appropriate at this property.
* Please do not switch off or move the wifi unit.
* There are over 30 external steps down to the cottage, and most stairs are gentle and wide. but if you do have access concerns, please check the photos carefully, or contact me first for more detailed photos of the steps, then decide if the access suits you.

* As the house is located on the sunny side of the hill, surrounded by the bush, the trees flower and attract birds, insects and from time to time ants. As a consequence, it is almost impossible to stop small numbers of insects from entering the cottage. We do not like to spray and poison too much in such a beautiful environment. If you are going to be an upset finding a few live or dead ants in the cottage this booking is not for you. We take a lot of pride in cleaning the cottage, but it may sit empty for a day or two before you arrive. We leave some windows open to air the property and a moth, spider or ant may visit between our clean and your arrival. They are part of life and we are in their environment, not the other way around.

* Driving on the hill can be very challenging for people more accustomed to driving on the flat wide roads, however they are normal for much of Wellington. In parts the road up to the cottage is one way. If you meet another car you can either back into the nearest drive to let them past or wait for them to do the same. but this kind of roads are quite normal for the most part of Wellington or NZ, which was built on the hills. Our family has been on the site for 70 years and knows of no crashes or accidents. It is actually very safe as everybody drives carefully and slowly.

During your stay
We don't always live on site but are able to meet guests if they need assistance or advice. We do visit the site every three or four days to mow the lawns water the garden and make repairs etc. If we are on site we live in our own cottage that is further down the hill and has it's own independent car park access and facilities. No facilities are shared with the exception of two clothes dryers which are in a common stand alone workroom.
