Penarwel offers comfort and peaceful privacy for garden and nature lovers, in grounds of 1 ½ acres on a beautiful stretch of the Avonbeg River surrounded by mature trees and shrubs.

All on one level, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the garden and three good sized double bedrooms (one en suite) in a newly refurbished house.

* * If you have children under 12 please contact us so we can explain some of the potential hazards which include a steep river bank and fast flowing river.

The space
Penarwel is perfect for a family holiday or for those seeking a relaxing break in a wonderful setting.

There is a wood burning stove in the sitting room, a well-equipped kitchen and a utility room with ample storage space and a fridge / freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, electric oven with ceramic hob.

For outdoor dining and relaxing there is a terrace and also a picnic bench overlooking the river.

WiFi, fuel, electricity, bed linen and towels included in rent.

The grounds extend to the water's edge of the Avonbeg although for safety there is a post and rail fence along the top of the riverbank with two gates that give access to the paths that lead steeply down to the river. Fly rods are available for guests.

Located just outside the village of Ballinaclash this is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area - Glenmalure is a few minutes’ drive and you are in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains – the historic and beautiful Glendalough is also close by as are the world famous gardens at Mount Usher.

Where you’ll be

Ballinaclash, County Wicklow, Ireland

Penarwel is on the the bank of the Avonbeg river just outside the village of Ballinaclash close to the 20,000 hectares Wicklow Mountains National Park.

The only shop in the village is Phelan's, a licensed grocer - when you go in turn left for the shop and right for the bar!

Rathdrum, 5km north east has a range of shops including a Centra supermarket, a butcher and a chemist as well as a medical center, bank and a number of bars and restaurants.

The Avonbeg flows through the village and joins the Avonmore a few kilometers south at the famous Meeting of the Waters where there is a bar with an outside terrace overlooking the rivers.

A few kilometers south of the Meetings is the village of Avoca - where the TV drama Ballykissangel was filmed and also home to the world famous Avoca Woolen Mill where you can tour the weaving mill to see the material for the throws, rugs and scarves being made and also visit the fabulous shop and café. More fabulous Avoca shops and cafés can be found to the north at Mount Usher Gardens in Ashford and at Kilmacanogue, both just off the N11.

BrookLodge & Macreddin Village are only 8km from the house where you will find a number of wonderful eateries including The Strawberry Tree, Ireland’s first certified Organic restaurant, La Taverna Armento, a Southern Italian style bistro and Actons Country Pub & Orchard Café as well as the Macreddin Golf Course, designed by European Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley.

The Glenmalure Lodge pub in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains is 9km north of Penarwel.

David and his wife, Emma, live on the Isle of Skye (where they run Barabhaig B & B) and along with their sons inherited Penarwel in 2014 since when the property has undergone a major refurbishment. Penarwel was built in the late 1970s by David's two uncles in what for the time in Ireland would have been quite an unusually modern style for a residential property with dramatic floor to ceiling windows. Although the house is all on one level it is on a slope so it has elevated views over the garden and across the Avonbeg valley. The garden has been developed from a bare field over the past 40 years but some of the oaks on the riverbank are reckoned to be over 300 years old.
