About this listing

Welcome to Manyika house! A beautiful colonial farm house set amidst it's own coffee plantation, with a 5 acre garden just 45km from Nairobi. Perfect for families, friend groups, retreats and a wonderful day picnic spot on weekdays!

The space

Welcome to Manyika house! A beautiful colonial farm house set amidst it's own coffee plantation, just 45km from Nairobi. Built in the 1930’s in the traditional English style, this historic homestead was once home to the pioneering aviator and famous horse trainer Beryl Markham. Soak up the history, enjoy your view of Mt. Kenya from the veranda and walk in the mature expansive garden and coffee fields of this beautiful country retreat.

This very spacious and genuine old-style farm house has four bedrooms that share two (URL HIDDEN) large and open living room has several tastefully furnished sitting areas, a high ceiling with original carved beams and a cozy fire place. The dining room with its antique interior invites to a delicious dinner prepared by the chef. The kitchen is fully equipped and you can drink the fresh borehole water straight from the tap!

Manyika also offers a small playground with a trampoline, slides, swings, sandbox and a football pitch. Kids also love our rabbits, dogs, turtles and are welcome to go out in the morning to collect the fresh eggs together with John, our caretaker. If it is a sunny day we can put out our swimming pool for the little ones for some water fun!

Guest sometimes ask us what you can 'do' at Manyika house and we always answer that at Manyika you just want to 'be'. Relax, rejuvenate, enjoy all the flowers and trees while wandering in the garden, read a book on the veranda, play, eat and come to rest. What else would you want?

However, if you do like to move around a bit, John, our gardener gladly takes you on a 1-1.5 hour walk on the coffee plantation. John will tell you about the plants, trees and surroundings while you can enjoy the beautiful and stunning views on the surrounding landscape and, on clear days, mount Kenya! We also have a few mountain bikes available that you are free to use and coffee tours to the nearby coffee factory can be arranged on request. If you stay longer, you are welcome to read books from our big library, including books of and about Beryl Markham, Manyika's former famous owner!

On less than 2 km from the house you'll find the newly developed golf estate Thika Greens where you can book a round in the morning or afternoon and come back to Manyika afterwards for a nice lunch or dinner prepared by our chef Joel.

We loved our stay at this house. All my guests kept saying that they wished we could stay longer! The rooms are gorgeous and spacious, and the outdoor space is even lovelier. We also took a walk through the coffee gardens, which was a real unique treat. Joel, the chef, was incredibly welcoming and helpful with whatever we needed, and Eva, the owner, was reliable and communicative up to the day we arrived. We'd love to come back again soon!

Manyika House was a perfect fit for the middle of our tour of Kenya. We had been on the go for 12 days by the time we got there and were ready for a respite. Manyika was a perfect place to renew ourselves before hitting the road again. We all went to the Blue Post Hotel for a quiet lunch. Upon return, three went on a tour of the coffee plantation and three of us chose to simply relax and enjoy Manyika. The setting is quite peaceful. Joel and John were very personable and helpful. We had wonderful meals and were well taken care of.

Manyika House is a beautiful rural retreat in the outbacks of Thika. It's a stunning place and the gardens, animals and climate are fantastic. The location is quite remote so you'll need a driver if you are planning to use the place as a base. Thika isn't screaming with things to do but there is a sweet little zoo and walk near the Blue Post Hotel. Joel and John who live on the farm are lovely and accommodating and both great at their jobs. I took two small kids and they loved the playground and toys at the house. It felt safe and secure. Eva, the manager was very helpful too. No internet (we went to the local Blue Post Hotel) to get this and no information/maps in the house so you do need to be a little organised (or at least not as disorganised as we were). The rooms were spotless. The views amazing on a clear day. I'd go again.

Lovely house, staff and environments. Markus made sure we had all the required info ahead of time and really it was a zero hassle weekend away. We enjoyed the grounds as well as nice mountain biking and running the area. House staff were great- including Joel who can cook up a storm in the kitchen. thanks again. hope to be back sometime soon. cheers Geraldine and friends.

This was a wonderful place to stay. We arrived and were warmly greeted by the staff, Joel and John, who took us around the house and made us dinner that night. The house is clean, the main rooms are nice and spacious. We ate very well all three nights. I highly recommend this as a place to stay if you are working in the area, or would like a few days away from the bustle of Nairobi.

My name is Eva Drager and I live with my husband and three children in Nairobi, Kenya since 2012. I am a mindfulness coach and organize silent retreats to allow people to connect with themselves, to enjoy nature and great food! This is how I came to know Manyika house! From 2013-2015 I choose Manyika house as my retreat location and always loved being there with my groups. When I got the chance to take over the management of the house I didn't have to think twice! I hope you will enjoy Manyika as much as I do!
