If you are looking for whitewashed minimalism this is not the place for you. Think Outlander, Jacobites, Sherlock Holmes, or Harry Potter, they'd all be comfortable here. Old Newton is an ancient fortified house built for defense with thick walls, low doors and spiral staircases. There are six bedrooms and six/seven public rooms. Ideal for family gatherings, retreats and reunions, with plenty of space to escape or to congregate.

The space
Old Newton is one of the three oldest continually inhabited houses in Scotland. It's rich written history can be dated back to the 14th century. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, David Hume the eminent Scottish philosopher, and Walter Scott, who wrote The Lady of the Lake here, have all been guests. The Edmonstones, who owned the house before the current Laird, were known Jacobites. Two of them were sent to the Tower of London but escaped death by virtue of their servants. Most recently the house has had a further Jacobite connection since it was home to members of the cast and crew of Outlander.

Guest access
Guest have access to the whole of the house and a large enclosed garden. Most rooms have a view of Doune castle or the parkland. The house is in a unique location set in its own grounds on the edge of the village. Within a few minutes walk the amenities are second to none. Good food, clothes, curios and gifts, not to mention having the magnificent Doune castle within an arrow shot!

Other things to note
The house has an Aga which is the beating heart of the kitchen. If you have not cooked on an Aga the housekeeper or myself will be happy to give you a quick demonstration. We are here to make your stay as memorable as possible. No weddings.

Neighbourhood highlights

Doune is at the centre of Scotland and therefore the universe! The house is utterly unique and has enough to keep people occupied but if further adventure is sought there is a wonderful antique centre a five minute drive away. The Blair Drummond safari park is a ten minutes away (in the morning if you are in the garden you can hear the lions roar as they wake up and get fed). Within fifteen minutes you can reach Stirling castle, one of Scotland's most impressive royal palaces. Dunblane is where International tennis legend Andy Murray lived and trained. Stirling University has multiple courts where he and his brother Jamie used to practice.
Golf - if we had any more holes we'd sink! Gleneagles, with its championship courses is fifteen minutes drive but closer to the house Dunblane and Callandar each have 18 hole courses.
For whisky lovers Deanston distillery is less then ten minutes drive. The movie The Angel's Share was filmed there.
We are on the edge of the Trossachs National Park where you can take a trip up Loch Katrine on the SS Walter Scott steamer. Or for the more adventurous there are Munros galore to climb.
Stirling university has a theatre and cinema, tennis facilities and an Olympic size swimming pool.
