Welcome to Lyme Regis! The Pearl of Dorset…

Lyme Regis is a Georgian town set on the picturesque Dorset coastline. Lyme received its royal charter in 1824 by King Edward 1. In the 13th Century Lyme developed into an important port, due to the now famous and dramatic Cobb wall. It was such a busy port that up until 1780 it was bigger than the port of Liverpool.
Although the port is now home mainly to fishing and sailing boats, Lyme has managed to retain the bustling energy, yet you can easily find peace and tranquility. Events run throughout the year - Life Boat Week, Regatta and Carnival Week, Fossil Festival, Arts Weeks, Candles on the Cobb, Lantern Parade and many more.
There are 3 immediate beaches, the main beach by the Cobb is sandy and popular with families. To the West it turns into shingle on Monmouth Beach (dog friendly) and to the East (also dog friendly) Back Beach, behind the church, has fantastic rock pools at low tide. If you get the timing right you can walk all the way along the beach to Charmouth.
Lyme is renowned for its fossils. Mary Anning, a pioneer in fossil hunting, found the first Ichthyosaur skeleton on Blue Lias Cliffs. Her work is known around the globe.
Famous writers have always been attracted to Lyme, with Jane Austen, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Hilaire Belloc, G.K Chesterton and J R R Tolkien all having written here. Writer John Fowles lived in Lyme for many years and based his most famous work here, The French Lieutenants Woman.
As an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a World Heritage Site, Lyme’s natural beauty encompasses wonderful hikes along the coastal path and inland, fantastic scenery and some fascinating walks along the beaches where you can discover millions of years of history through the fossilised cliffs.
There is a range of boutique shops, cafes and restaurants in Lyme and of course some excellent fish and chip shops (the best of which in my opinion is in Coombe St!). Culturally vibrant, Lyme has its own theatre, two museums, many galleries and a listed Art Deco Cinema (due to reopen soon).
Food and drink are a big part of life in Dorset. From wood fired pizza, Dorset cream teas to seafood and chips, there is an array of local delights to enjoy. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage is close by and Hix Oyster and Fish House run by Celebrity Chef Mark Hix sits in an idyllic spot overlooking Lyme Bay. (Book ahead)
