Location

Strangford, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

Strangford is one of Irelands most beautiful coastal villages. Located at the mouth of Strangford Lough the Viking name means "Strong Fjford" due to the fast tidal currents.

It is an ideal base for touring large parts of Ireland, North and South. An idyllic picturesque rural location but less than 1 hour to Belfast, and Dublin approximately 2 hours away.

A designated area of outstanding natural beauty and national marine reserve Strangford lough offers a host of activities from scenic walks, world class golf to adventure sports. For a small village Strangford is blessed with many local amenities, renowned restaurants and traditional Irish pubs, all a short stroll away.

Strangford is connected by ferry to the town of Portaferry on the other side of the Narrows. An attraction in itself the ferry service dates back to 1180 and is one of the oldest recorded ferry crossings in the world. Portaferry is home to an Aquarium and Seal Rescue Centre and good options for food and drinks.

The Castleward National Trust Estate adjoins Strangford village. Game of Thrones fans will know it as the set of Winterfell. It has miles of beautiful coastal and forest trails to walk or cycle, a historic manor house and castles. A nice little cafe too.

The local area is known as "St Patricks Country" with many associations with Ireland's national Saint. The nearest town is Downpatrick, the burial place of St Patrick and with a dedicated Visitor Centre telling the story of St Patrick.

Strangford sits in the shadows of the beautiful Mourne Mountains. Inspiration for C.S. Lewis' magical Kingdom of Narnia, the Mournes offer world class hiking and walking opportunities.
