Other things to note
Mauriac has the advantage of being a city rich in natural heritage, but also architectural, including many monuments classified or listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments.
A building in the Auvergne Romanesque style, the Notre-Dame-des-Miracles basilica was built in the 12th century from cut stones. In particular, you can admire a unique carved Languedoc portal in Haute Auvergne, as well as a carved Renaissance-style door. Inside, Baroque-style furniture and a polychrome Romanesque baptismal font complete the ensemble. It should also be noted that various objects have been classified as historical artistic objects, such as a painting of the miracles of the Virgin or an 18th-century eagle lectern.
Walking through Mauriac, you can discover the remains of the Saint-Pierre monastery built in the 12th century on the site of a Carolingian monastery and an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Mercury.
Housed in the former outbuildings of the Saint-Pierre monastery, the Mauriac Museum consists of beautiful vaulted rooms. Exceptional exhibitions on the art of local artists can be regularly admired there.
The Hôtel d'Orcet, which now houses the sub-prefecture, is a must-see monument in Mauriac. Built in the 18th century from a 15th century tower, it has a state room with Aubusson tapestries, as well as beautiful woodwork. Above the entrance gate to the courtyard, a tympanum depicts Samson slaying a lion.
In the historic city, it is possible to see the ancient ramparts of the city, thanks to the presence of many dry stone walls.
The artificial lake of Mauriac allows you to enjoy various leisure activities. In addition to swimming, it is possible to learn to pedal or kayak. The city is also home to a nine-hole golf course, as well as tennis and petanque courts.
