Before starting, I would like to note this review is of our entire stay in Akumal. I'll start with the Suite for those only interested in a review of the rental. Suite was clean and has nice deck overlooking the gardens. Only real issue we had was the toilet didn't flush consistently. Not a huge issue for us though because we understand the infrastructure in Mexico as one of us was born here. Pool is nice and beach is beautiful. Didn't meet Myrna, but the onsite staff are fabulous. Very helpful. Now, what you'll see if you wander onto the beach and into Akumal. We heard loud drumming one morning and went to see what it was. We discovered a protest/demonstration on the beach. As we speak Spanish, we were able to ascertain from those protesting and those not that there is an ongoing tension between locals and resort owners over tours to see the turtles and what locals argue is a privatization attempt by the wealthy to narrow/restrict access. There were several items burned on the beach, to include a palapa. The demonstration was over relatively quickly, however, we learned there were others that resulted in violence not long ago. There are stories detailing these on the internet, which we found after our stay. Since the ocean and its inhabitants are defenseless, they have suffered from all sides. Irregardless of who is at fault, be it the resorts who have brought in too many people, outside tours, or locals, or some combination thereof, it is clear from what I witnessed that this location is in peril. I spent one day in the water and didn't return after witnessing individuals lather on non-biodegradable sunscreen and go into the water without thought, stand on coral, and surround the one turtle eating seagrass until he was forced to swim away for air. It felt zooish to be honest. People on the beach had their picnics, or had a beer, and left their trash right on the beach. I picked up trash daily as I couldn't stand the sight of it going into the ocean. There is massive trash accumulation at the entry into Akumal, near the Collectivo stop that extends down both sides of the road and into the jungle. A Frenchman and I picked up several bags resulting in barely a dent. Sad. It reminds me of the Eagles lyric: "They call it paradise I don't know why Call someplace paradise kiss it goodbye." I may be an overly sensitive individual, so take it for what it is. However, I love nature and believe we are all to be stewards no matter what location we find ourselves in. In closing, I'd like to add we met some great people in Akumal, and had terrific service at local restaurants. Laundry service in the pueblo was excellent. Seeing the Mayan ruins and cenotes was the experience of a lifetime. Truly magnificent.

Thank you, Autumn, for your review. I love nature too. I grew up here and everyday hurts when I see all this chaos. In short, A group of us are fighting for saving Akumal. Its too bad you witnessed some of the violence. It is under control and SOON new positive changes will come. All the best.

Raj Kumal is the best place to stay in all of Akumal. It's our second time there. It's just steps away from the beach and the town but it's also very private and quiet at night. The staff is friendly. The place is clean inside and out. It has a beautiful semi-private beach with silky sand and shade when you want it. You can find anything you need at the little grocery stores and all of the walkeable restaurants are fantastic. The kitchen is stocked with any tool that you need and fresh drinking water is always available.

Thank you Wendy, for your kind review. I am so happy that you came back and enjoyed your stay a second time. I hope there will be a third visit. All the best.

Myrna was an expert facilitator to make our visit exceptionally smooth and easy. She was readily available with advice and suggestions when we needed it, and her support staff at the Villa was so kind & thorough. The Villa is in a key fabulous location in Akumal, we felt very welcome and at home there, would go back again and again.

I administrate my villas and love Akumal as a place to live and work. Scuba diving and yoga are my hobbies. I have been living in Akumal for 40 years! I love to travel. We are very ecological here; protecting the turtles, the bay, recycling trash, protecting flora and fauna. I like my guests to feel at home. I have many repeat guests every year.
