Historic 3 bedroom home in small historic prairie town near Lake Shetek. Beautiful flower gardens, hot tub and a view of all the action in town. 3 blocks from historic End-O-Line railroad park and museum. 20 miles from the Laura Engles Wilder home.

The space

This home was built in 1890 by one of the 2 founding brothers of Currie, Archibald Currie. He had it built for his mother. One of the photos is the oldest picture we have found of the house. It has been added on to several times. We are constantly working on improving the house and the grounds so there are always signs of construction and new gardening but that is also a big part of the charm. The home is kid friendly but not kid proof. Please supervise the children. Although the house is on the main thoroughfare of Currie, it is more quiet than anywhere in a large town or city.

This is not a 5 star hotel. It is an old house that we are fixing up but we love it and enjoy sharing it with others. The bathroom has a tub and shower. The bathroom is newly renovated with ceramic tile tub surround, new flooring and many new fixtures.

The main floor bedroom has a comfortable real queen size bed. The rest of the beds in the house are queen size air beds with built in air pumps with the exception of one single bed that has box spring and mattress.

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire house and grounds including the outdoor fireplace with plenty of wood and the hot tub. The out buildings are not accessible to guests and we have a few locked cabinets where we store personal items.

Interaction with guests

We live in a different town so will not likely interact in person with guests but it is very likely the neighbors will.

Other things to note

Currie has the amazing End-O-Line railroad park and museum that is nationally and internationally known. Make sure you see it. There is also a great dinner restaurant - the Lakeside Hideaway, a cafe with a bowling alley across the street and a gas station/convenience store on the south end of town. About 1.5 miles to the north of town is a great cafe for breakfast, lunch and dinner (supper as it's known in Currie). There is a bar/liquor store kiddie corner from the house and an American Legion directly across Mill Street. There is no grocery store in Currie but there are in Slayton, Westbrook and Tracy.

We had a wonderful stay at Joel and Carla's. The house was very comfortable for our group of six, plenty of supplies, very nicely decorated, enjoyed the hot tub and morning coffee in the sun room very much. I highly recommend this property/hosts, very warm and inviting, would love to stay again sometime.

What a lovely retreat location! It is beautifully decorated and has the love, peace and joy vibe. Very quiet and most comfortable, and I would have loved to have been able to stay longer! Thanks for the delicious coffee!

What a great place to stay in Southwest Minnesota, thank you Joel and Carla for great accommodations in Currie, MN. Lovely home, very clean, nicely decorated, roomy dining, and a perfect for three couples/families staying in the area. The hot tub is great! We will use this again for a Lake Shetek area vacation rental. It is close to the End O Line railroad and history museum, the miles of bike trails, and only a few minutes from Lake Shetek State Park and Campground. The Lakeside Hideway restaurant nearby has great food, don't miss it.

Response from Joel & Carla:
We are already planning on replacing upstairs airbeds with real ones but we need to get ones that we can get up that small stairway. We may have found the solution and will be trying something out soon.

My family loved their stay at the Prairie Getaway. Everything was wonderful for them and better than they expected. Joel & Carla were very responsive to all of my questions. It was such a great experience for everyone.

We loved our stay at Joel & Carla's Prairie Getaway! It was a perfect place to stay with our infant and friends during our travel to a wedding in the area. The instructions were very clear, the home had a lot of character and history that they were proud to share, and I so appreciated the fresh garden vegetables they left for us! The home was clean and met the description they provided. The neighborhood was quiet and the lady who served us at the cafe across the street was great. Would definitely stay here if we are ever in the area again!

The house was as described. The house is old and under renovation. The house was clean. The yard is beautiful with lots of flowers which was a nice surprise. There were three couples so the house allowed us the opportunity to gather and visit versus each having individual hotel rooms. I think this house provides the best value for multiple couples or a family in the Tracy/Currie area versus staying at nearby hotels.
