The space

Fiddelwood Cottage located on a cul-de-sac, is a very private, one bedroom (with AC), fully equipped, house on the undeveloped, quiet side of St. John, nestled within the Virgin Islands National Park.

The cottage sleeps 2, maximum 3 (pull out couch in living room) and is affordable for those who want complete comfort without pretentiousness. There are established gardens with large trees and fresh herbs growing for your meals. Satellite TV available in both the living room and bedroom.

There is a direct line to the cellphone tower with great reception provided your carrier works here. AT&T service works beautifully but Sprint, Verizon, etc. are spotty. Wireless internet service is available.

Discounts available for stays of 3 weeks or more.

Guest access

The kitchen is complete with coffee maker, microwave, stove, full refrigerator, toaster, blender, drinking water, paper towels, dish soap, etc. All bed linens and bath towels are also provided.

Laundry facilities are not available for 1 week only rentals. If you need personal laundry done an additional charge of $30 paid directly to housekeeper is available. If you are staying for 2 or more weeks, weekly maid service is provided. Fresh linens, towels along with a light cleaning plus your personal laundry will be done at no extra charge.

There are beach towels, chairs, a cooler and swim fins available but we recommend you bring your own snorkel mask.

Interaction with guests

We will be glad to have boxes shipped of special foods or whatever you need for your visit provided they are shipped altogether and we get tracking numbers. We take no responsibility for damage or loss.

If you'd like to have the cottage stocked with food the day you arrive, we charge a $75 shopping fee plus the cost of food paid directly upon arrival. Just email a shopping list and we'll do the rest. There is an organic garden on island with fresh greens/sprouts always available plus local fruits and vegetables that are in season.

Generally the car rental agencies will meet you at the ferry dock but if need be someone will meet you and escort you to your rental vehicle, grocery shopping and then show you to the cottage.

Since Fiddlewood is a short distance from the end of the bus line some prefer not to rent a car for their entire stay. Instead rent one for the last few days of your trip to explore the rest of St. John. Having a vehicle for your departure makes the journey a lot smoother too!

We provide a Welcome Basket either Afternoon or Morning.
Afternoon: Wine (red or white), Beer(what brand), Soda or Juice (type/flavor) cheese & crackers plus fruit. Morning: Banana or Pumpkin Bread, yogurt & fruit.

Coffee and tea are always provided as well as vinegars, olive oil plus some condiments and spices. Remember there is drinking water at the sink so no need to buy bottled.

We are 40 year residents of St. John and Fiddlewood will be our retirement home when we can no longer make it up the 50 steps from our permanent home in East End. We do all the work and are always available for problems or questions. We love our gardens and depending upon the rain we come every 3rd day after your arrival to water between 3-6PM but always call before hand to inform our guests.

Other things to note

There are fans in all rooms and great airflow throughout the cottage with breezy trade winds. Run fans in kitchen and living room to circulate cool air. AC in bedroom & additional ceiling fan.

There are the occasional donkey's or deer that wander by and like to eat parts of the garden. In the garden by the dining table and gas grill there are fresh herbs for your culinary whims as well as medicinal Native plants for bodily comforts. We have also planted Moringa, Lime, Papaya, and Coconut trees for future treats!

I told Mary I'd be happy to leave a review, but part of me would really just like to keep Mary and Les's cottage a closely held secret. I don't really want everyone to know about it. But let me see if I can do it justice. It's a honeymoon cottage, just right for a couple. An old-school Caribbean island house, completely modernized and tastefully remodeled, with all the conveniences. Decks on three sides. A lovely view of the biggest of all the salt ponds on St. John, and just a glimpse of the ocean in the distance. Decorated with lovely original paintings and other objects of art. Communication with the host was clear, honest, accurate and easy. Very quiet and well off the beaten path. Walking distance to Grootpan and Kiddle Bays. Yet, amazingly, great internet...and great cell phone service. That is not a given on St. John, in case you don't know. I could say a lot more but you'd just want to go there. If you do, take really good care of the cottage, and don't touch the coral when you snorkel. It's endangered.

Mary's cottage is amazing! Tranquility and peace at its best. Loved having coffee on the back deck every morning over the salt pond with the ocean in the distance. Full kitchen and fresh herbs growing outside! If you're looking to get away from the crowds and get some peace and quiet, look no further. There are beach chairs, an umbrella, and even snorkel fins to use. Just around the corner from salt pond bay, which ended up being our favorite beach. Great value and great experience, we will be back!

We could not be any happier with our experience. The host (Mary): extremely communicative and helpful to assure a smooth transition from the airport at St Thomas to her doorstep. She has provided excellent counsel prior to the trip to ensure that we avoiding any pitfalls (this was our first visit to this island. Especially, take note of her recommendation regarding the importance of early reservation for rental cars! The house: As described, this is a magical cottage at the doorstep to the national park. Our holiday consisted in morning walks in the national park (5mn drive to the trail head) where you can walk for hours under a canopy of foliage followed by some fun snorkeling. Late afternoons were reading on the porch that was very private with a great vista followed by home cooked meals. There are a few restaurants that are 15-20mn away, but this house is ideal if you enjoy being removed and seek minimal social activities. The house was spotless and well-furnished for our needs (this is only for one couple).

Mary was very welcoming and accommodating. The cottage was beautiful, unique, and scenic. It was also very well equipped for our needs. We enjoyed "being off the beaten path" on the Coral Bay side of St. John. Every morning we woke up to the beautiful sounds of birds singing to us. If you are looking for a unique and peaceful island experience, I recommend this to you.

Response from Mary:
Daniel and Trava were lovely guests who unfortunately may have gotten very sunburned as the refrigerator poetry magnets revealed with "Two sunburned babies". That being said, there was a lot of "sprayed" product used to relieve this discomfort and when I went into to the cottage after they left, my shoes stuck when I walked on the tiles. In fact, every surface had a sticky film on it. I contacted them and they were gracious enough to acknowledge this and we worked it out together. Good news is I was ready to wash the living room rug and all of the upholstery covers (as I do every 3 months). Even better news is I acquired another "DO" on the cottage list: Do APPLY all SPRAYED body products like sunscreen & bug spray OUTSIDE, away from the cottage. In appreciation for another lesson learned.

Mary could not have been more gracious! A lovely person with an extremely beautiful, warm home. If you're looking for a secluded get-away, close to some wonderful beaches, look no further. The landscaping is stunning, the views amazing and the front and back porches relaxing. Everything about our stay was A+++! A truly joyful experience. Thanks Mary & Les!
