Where you’ll be

Aubigne , Pays de la Loire, France

Belle Vue is located in the pretty hamlet of Aubigné with its church, small park and historic town hall. Aubigné is a quiet and tranquil setting in which to unwind.

Both the nearby towns of Chef Boutonne and Brioux Sur Boutonne, both approximately 10 minutes drive, offer supermarkets, shops, banks, bakeries and a small selection of restaurants. Our children particularly like the pizza restaurant in Chef.

There are lots of activities and attractions to keep both parents and children entertained such as:

Plan d’eau dès Gours (15 mins)
Lovely swimming area or just relax in the sun. There is a sandy area with a play park to keep the little ones entertained, toilets and a snack bar just across the road.

Plan d'eau Saint-Macoux (35mins)
An inland lake suitable to swim/paddle in. There are lots of picnic benches and shade is available under the trees. Part of the lake is cordoned off for swimming and paddling in. There is a water slide that is in often in operation in an afternoon during July - September. There is also a children's play park, toilets and an onsite restaurant (Le Marais) that serves lunch and snacks (closed on Mondays).

Rejallent - Ruffec (40 mins)
A picturesque riverside location with a thriving onsite restaurant (Le Rejallant). Plenty of shade, picnic benches and a play park. There are lots of places to enter the river depending on whether you would like to paddle or swim. There is a supervised area that is roped off, ideal for little ones to paddle. For older children, lots of people tend bring inflatables or you can hire kayaks and pedelos. We have always found the kayak staff great (most speak English and some are English). We have often taken a picnic which you can pack into a dry box on the kayak and then enjoy at a picnic spot along the route. Once you have finished your chosen route you can simply ring the kayak company and they will come a collect you and your kayaks and drive you back to your starting point.

Marais Poitevin (60 mins)
The region is extensively crossed by canals and rivers and in many parts is best explored by boat, either as a guided tour or boat hire. The area is known as Venise Verte (Green Venice) due to the lime green floating duck weed that covers the interconnecting canals. The region is known for its wide range of wildlife. On our visits we have been lucky enough to spot otters and kingfishers. Other popular activities in Marais Poitevin include cycling, fishing and you can even explore the area by donkey.

Zoodysee (25 mins)
An animal park showcasing European wildlife. A great place to take the kids , lots of different animals to see and get up close to them.

Valley des Singes (50 mins)
A lovely place to get up close to a variety of monkeys. A great hit with children and adults alike.

Donkey Sanctuary (20 mins)
One of the main breeding centres for the hairy Poitou donkey. The donkeys can be seen closely and there is a Visitor Centre with tours on offer in English and French.

Aquarium de La Rochelle (1hr 15mins)
The aquarium is regarded as one of the best private aquariums in Europe. The aquarium is open all year round and a great option if the weather is bad.

Château de Jarzay (10 mins)
Located in Chef Boutonne and is currently under restoration but the lake and grounds surrounding the château are very pleasant to walk around or to picnic in.

Saint-Hilaire church – Melle (25 mins)
The beautiful church of Saint-Hilaire was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church has an ‘ecclesiastical juke-box’ which plays hymns and chants.

Silver Mines – Melle (25 mins)
Melle is home to the oldest silver mine in Europe that is still open to the public. The mine itself is some 20km long and visitors can explore 350m of it with guided tours each day.

Arboretum, Chemin de la Découverte – Melle (25 mins)
The Arboretum is spread out over Melle covering 6km. This walk passes more than ,1000 species of trees and shrubs and a collection of over 100 roses.

Futuroscope (75 mins)
Parc du Futuroscope is a French theme park based upon multimedia, cinematographic and audio-visual techniques. It has several 3D cinemas and a few 4D cinemas along with other attractions and shows.

There are numerous beautiful sandy beaches along the west coast circa 75 to 90 mins away.
