A delightful 2 bedroom, single story, cosy country cottage close to South Downs National Park. Charming private walled garden, within the gardens of Pickhams. Garden murals, original artist's work throughout. Suitable for couples and families. Sleeps 2 to 6 (double sofa bed in living room).
Quiet and secluded, perfect for walking/cycling to local attractions. Off road parking, private entrance. Dog friendly (small fee for dogs). An hour and a half from London, minutes from the Sunshine Coast.

The space
Private ground floor entrance via its own garden, the property is a self contained bungalow, an annexe to Pickhams. There are a couple of small steps to access the porch / garden.

The porch leads into a spacious, vibrant lounge featuring artwork, tv, high speed fibre broadband, comfortable sofas and arts and crafts chair, stripped wooden floors and rugs. Double sofa bed. Log burner for use in the winter months (we'll provide a few logs, you can buy more).

A small hallway accesses 2 double bedrooms, simply decorated with interesting touches, one features a large built in wardrobe / storage area, a bookcase with a selection of books to buy / swap, the other was originally the artist's studio and has a painted floor, a 1950's cupboard and displays dozens of interesting works of art.

The bathroom has a bath with overhead shower (hot water provided by a timer controlled immersion heater), mosaic details and tongue and groove painted ceiling and panelling contrasting with the light, white tiles.
In the spacious kitchen there is a large oak dining table, beautiful painted dresser, a large, vintage belfast sink and small solid fuel range (we will light this before your arrival in winter months and guests are welcome to keep it going), tiled beech work surface, gas hob, electric fan oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, dishwasher, fridge freezer, tongue and groove ceiling with down lights, black and white chequered tile floor.

The cottage does not have central heating - in winter months heating is provided by the woodburner in the living room and the range in the kitchen, which also provides additional hot water and cooking ability for the adventurous (we'll start you off with some logs and will have more for you to buy). There are also timer controlled electric heaters in the bedrooms and living room to keep the chill off.

Art tuition (choose one to one or a class for your whole party) is available as an add on with owner, Josie Tipler, artist and art tutor - check her availability before placing your booking.

Guest access
The terraced, walled garden has 2 patio areas with table and chairs and a couple of loungers. Parking on the driveway is by the gate into the gardens - it is possible to accommodate 2 cars. There is an optional front entrance onto the lane for if the main driveway gates are locked (occasionally locked overnight with prior warning). The accommodation is within the gardens of Pickhams which visitors may like to explore, with its pond, paddock, labyrinth, hidden areas, conifers, fruit trees and lawns. The main gardens of Pickhams are usually the home of Summer Trifle, a mini annual Arts Festival in August and are open to the public during the festival - in 2020 the festival has been cancelled.

Other things to note
A fee of £25 for one dog, £35 for 2 dogs, is payable on arrival (either in cash or we can request payment through Airbnb).
Magpie Cottage is at the end of a single track country lane which becomes a green lane track and bridleway. Occasionally the green lane is used by off-road drivers or motorcyclists who are generally quiet and considerate to walkers and cyclists.
Built on clay, the gardens can be wet and muddy and paths can be slippery in wet weather.
Please note that this is a rural property so visitors can expect a loud morning chorus, spiders, a distant cockerel crow, the sound of occasional agricultural activity, and the baa-ing of sheep.
The Security Deposit - your payment details are stored but not charged or authorised for the deposit unless the host makes a claim. The host has 14 days from your checkout date to make a claim on the deposit for damages to their property.

I am an artist and my husband, Jim, is a graphic designer and musician. We perform together as the folk duo, Milton Hide. We first used Airbnb on a road trip from Memphis to New York and had some brilliant experiences. We have three grown up sons. We love art, music, cats and dogs and are very easy going. We are new hosts on Airbnb, having decided in 2018 to open to visitors Magpie Cottage , the self-contained bungalow at our home of Pickhams. The walls are covered in my original works of art and there are murals in the lovely walled garden.

During your stay
Generally the welcoming and friendly property owners are on site in Pickhams (the main property) or available by 'phone. We would enjoy showing visitors around the gardens and talking about the art in Magpie Cottage, or are happy to leave visitors alone as they like.
The owners have a dog, 2 cats. Visitors are welcome to book to bring a dog or two. It is the perfect area for dog walking.
We can leave milk, home made bread, jam and free range eggs for visitors to prepare their own breakfast, by prior agreement. There is also a Milk&More delivery in the area three mornings a week so advanced orders could be placed.
