Description

The space

You have never seen anything like this place. High up in the mountains overlooking the blue mediterranean, surrounded by olive trees in the World Heritage site of the Tramuntana mountains walkable to Deia and one hour walk to Soller.

There is a 20 minute drive from the main road up a steep private road that is well maintained by the locals who live here or spend their weekends here picking olives and tending sheep.

The whole place is completely off-grid. Get the YouTube video details by searching for my channel offgridnick

When you get here you enter a different world where water and electricity are treated like gold.

Log fires and wood-burning stoves provide the heating. the kitchen fridge and hob is powered by Butane. There is also a BBQ.

Its in a national park so you will see all kinds of birds and flowers as you ascend the mountain. Fro the front door you can walk to Deia or Soller in 60-90 mins.

Guest access

You have complete flexibility - - can rent one or two or three cabins, each housing a family - have a cook or just be by yourself, using the outdoor kitchen. The basic price quoted is for an individual or a couple - larger groups extra by arrangement

The top house has two rooms, wireless broadband from a solar panel, outdoor kitchen with gas fridge, gas hob and barbeque.

In winter there is a fireplace and a wood-burner. We have to charge extra for wood beyond the first nights supply.

The two flushing toilets are fed from the 40,000 litre rainwater tank, which is also good for drinking. We drink it outselves, but some might prefer to bring cherap bottled water from the supermakret in the village at the bottom of the hill.

Interaction with guests

As much or as little as you want.

I can cook you breakfast, or not. Take you on guided walks or not. Show you around the island. Teach you local skills like dry stone walling and Olive tree pruning. Its up to you.

I am not always present. If I am not here then Anne, a local woman will be in charge. Her fixed job is to meet you in town, show you to the top, give you keys, show you how everything works and make sure you have clean sheets, towels (and breakfast if that is included).

The basic price includes breakfast on your first morning.

The neighbourhood

The Tramuntana mountains are a World Heritage site - much loved by walkers and very well sign posted. From here you can walk to Deia, Valdemossa, Soller, Fornalutx or even Lluc.

Most of the houses along the private road are owned by local Mallorcans who come up at weekends to tend their olive groves and their sheep. They are very friendly and welcoming but rarely here during the week.

the best times are sitting and cooking the local lamb in the outdoor kitchen by day or by night. Eating in the kitchen or for larger groups in the garden outside.

The well-signed routes from here to Deia or Soller are a delight - world class views and the smells of Orange, Lemon, Fig, Pine and Olive are like a heady perfume.

In November, be warned, the hills echo to the sounds of shotguns as the short-lived shooting season swings into action.

Getting around

You can go on amazing mountain walks straight out of the door.

There is a public bus from Palma to the bottom of the hill. But it is almost always better to rent a car from the airport. Choose a small car - cheaper and easier to get up the track.

Take the zero excess package and you are safeguarded against problems caused by the rough road.

It is 30 minutes by car from the airport to the bottom of the private road and a further 20 minute drive to the house - or a steep one hour walk.

Once at the bottom of the hill, the beach is 5 minutes, there are two sides to the port, and one has a sandy beach much loved by young families. There is a also a rocky area for nude sunbathing and diving.

Its 20 minutes to the top of Deia beach which has two great restaurants and a buzzing social scene.

Other things to note

The price quoted is for the room. So one or two adults is 75 per night. Children are free.

I am open to doing deals outside the high seasons, or for lengthy stays or one person stays.

There is an excellent 3G phone signal which I use for emails on my phone and also for computer interent access via the Wi-fi hotspot setting. There is no wi-fi at the moment, though it can be installed for 30 Euros per month.

There are two houses which easily sleep two adults and two children each.
The house and grounds are not child-proofed and your host is not liable in the event of an accident involving children or adults.

The smaller house is best suited to one couple. There is also a large covered area with open walls which is a great place to sleep in high summer but is not listed as a bedroom here.

There are a lot of things you need to know about how to run your own power station, manage a limited water supply and haul your own trash. There is a separate video on Vimeo and You Tube. We will send you the details after you book and Anne will show you around and explain the importance of conserving water - if a tap is left running that could end our water supply for the summer. You can cook on the barbeque in the kitchen but there are no open fires allowed throughout the mountain in the summer, and the fire department have permanent lookouts to ensure that rule is obeyed.

The rest of the year there is no issue with open fires.

The You Tube video provides a complete guide.

To sum up: you need to conserve energy and water, expect to set yourself up for the night before it gets dark, be a fearless driver on the steep windy mountain road and be willing to endure a 20-minute drive down the mountain to the nearest beach in Puerto Soller, or a 30- minute drive to the best local beach - Cala Deia.

Upon making the booking you specifically agree that the road up to the house requires expert driving and the property has sudden drops - your host is not liable in the event of an accident. We ask you to confirm your agreement as an insurance waiver - namely that in the event of an accident of any sort you will not hold us responsible or liable in any way. If we insured the property the rent would be double.

The house and grounds are not child-proofed and your host is not liable in the event of any accident involving children or adults.

You agree to reconfirm the above two points by email after booking

Away from mass-tourism at Palma is this house on the hill. 20 mins away from the nearest town, this is a great place to relax, cook a nice dinner and stare at the flames in the fireplace at night.

Wonderful view at this place, it was our second stay there but we really enjoy it again. So magic to live differently, to be right in the nature surrounded by mountains. The house is a typical stone's house and a nice fireplace to prepare BBQ admiring the view on Port Soller. So a really good experience that i recommend!

Well looked after by the hosts and guided up the path to the house. Absolutely beautiful place, the photos do not do it justice! Perfect for relaxing and unwinding. Really interesting to see how the place is kitted out and has more than just the basic necessities. We had no problems getting up the track to the house, however it was tricky. We had a rental fiat 500 from the airport and it was struggling a bit, but we didn't break down or have any real problems. Small car is necessary to get around the corners.

Anne who takes care of the place came to meet us in Soller and took us up. She is a wonderful person, so patient and kind. She braught us some food and wonderful lemons from her trees which made us feel so much at home. She then carefully explained to us the two city people how to cop with living off grid which worked out real well. It was a fantastic place and very unique.

Great mountain retreat with a stunning view over Port Soller. have a breakfast outside next to sheep and Pancho, the donkey. Everything like in the pictures. once you realize that your car will manage the way up, you start to relax and in the end you will manage the way in 10 min. Nick explained everything by mail and Anne was there to show us the house. I would love to come back!

This place is magic! For all the busy, stressed and hardworking people out there, Nick's house gently brings you back on your feet, opens minds, re-connects to nature. You will be on own in the wild enjoying a stunning view. The handover was very pleasant and reliable. Will definitely come back.

Anne who showed us the property was very friendly and made sure we had a smooth arrival. The property was exactly what we were looking for - a proper escape from everything, and being high up a great base for hiking the area.
