Decorated in typical, colourful Guatemalan style room no 1 has its own private bathroom and shady terrace overlooking Lake Petén Itzá and our beautiful private gardens with hummingbirds, orchids and tropical plants.

The space

Gucumatz Lakeside Inn is situated on the shore of beautiful Lake Petén Itzá just five kilometers from the small town of San José and seven hundred meters before reaching the village of San Pedro.
The Inn has beautiful tropical gardens, eight bedrooms for guests all with private bathrooms and terrace looking out onto the gardens and lake. All are decorated in colorful Guatemalan style.
There is a large sitting room with local literature and book exchange containing a superb collection of masks, handmade furniture and handicraft brought from all over the country. Adjoining this room is a games room with a table for eight people and a variety of table games. This room houses a small museum and is also suitable for meetings and/or classes.
We have an open-air bar with hammock, ping-pong and table football.

Guest access

The beach area has ample space for relaxing, reading and swimming. The water is clean, transparent and warm all year round. Kayaks are available free for the use of our guests.

Interaction with guests

We offer a typical Guatemalan breakfast from 7.30 to 9.30 for Q40 and dinner at 19.00 for Q100. We do not provide lunch but can recommend alternative restaurants in San José for those who remain here during the day.
We are available to help you organize your excursions to Tikal (41 kms), Yaxhá (55 kms) and elsewhere as well as make reservations for your onward journey to Guatemala City, Belize, Mexico or Semuc Champey.

Other things to note

Cookery classes are available in a local home for those of you who wish to try making tamales, refried black beans or the famous chicken broth and sharing the meal with the cook´s family (price Q70 plus ingredients).
Horse back riding and hiking are other activities we can organize for you.
Guests will have the perfect opportunity to take Spanish classes and put their existing knowledge into practice during their stay here.

Moya is an excellent host, and the Gucumumtz Lakeside Inn is paradise on earth. If you're looking for a place to relax, this is your place, you can just laze all day in the hammocks, use the kayaks, swim in the lake... The sunsets by the lake are breathtaking. Moya kindly arranged our transfer from the airport, and our transport to Tikal!! She prepares amazing breakfasts and her dinners are worth trying. We wish her and her son, Jason, the best. Thanks for having us.

I had a lovely stay with Moya - a very peaceful place. Moya was hugely helpful, arranging a trip to Tikal and taxis / hotel bookings. Swimming in the lake was fantastic. It's a little remote but there are buses, taxis and tuc tucs into neighbouring villages and Flores. Definitely recommended.

We cannot speak highly enough of Moya and our stay at Gucumatz Lakeside Inn. We arrived extremely tired from a very long bus journey and instantly felt very welcome. This set the tone for the rest of our three night stay (we added an extra night because it was so good) during which we enjoyed very good food and swimming in the beautiful lake Itza. The standard of accommodation and attention to detail really made our stay very comfortable and Moya went above and beyond when helping us arrange the rest of our trip.

If you are looking for a place of tranquility and relaxation you've found it. No bells and whistles, just beauty and nature surrounding you. The most beautiful lake that is as warm as a bathtub. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Moya is extremely helpful in helping you plan out anything you want to do. Moya was a great host. We will definitely be back!

We really enjoyed our stay - the location was beautiful, and Moya was a wonderful hostess! The water was crystal clear and the views amazing. The only issue we had was the distance by bus to Santa Elena, the main town near Flores - it would be best to have your own transport when staying there... If you do have to go by bus take the bus to San Pedro to get to Gucumatz, it leaves from La Tranca Market in Santa Elena and costs 13GTQ per person one way. Moya has the bus schedule written out and you can wait right outside the gate for the bus. I'd highly recommend it for a quiet getaway - stock up on snacks and wine at La Dispensa Familiar near the bus terminal - you can get breakfast and dinner at Gucumatz but not lunch... Dinner there is delicious!

After 11 incredible but hectic days in Antigua I was looking for some peace and quiet. Gucumatz Lake Inn didn't disappoint. The water is clear and blue with temperature made to order. The gardens are lush and green with flowers and little hummingbirds everywhere. The beds are comfortable, showers hot, meals delicious and the host exceptional. What more could you ask for? Included is a very cute old Boxer, a cuddly pup and one friendly cat. Thanks Moya for making my stay perfect.

I´m a retired teacher. British by birth, Spanish by nationality where I spent 34 wonderful years of my life. Now I live quietly by a beautiful lake in northern Guatemala trying to lend a hand in the near by village and share my beautiful home with whoever would like to come and visit me. I enjoy nature, reading, music and healthy outdoor life in general. I have an ecological garden and try to be as self-sufficient as possible. I´m a member of the Tikal Rotary Club, working towards a better Petén.
