This cozy, 3-bedroom, solar-powered home is located at the end of a quiet country road in the Eastern Adirondacks. Recently renovated and decorated with original artwork, it is perfect for year-round getaways. We welcome people from all backgrounds to visit this slice of paradise!

The space
The Space:
Accommodations downstairs include: Screened porch (seasonal), a full kitchen, living room with futon couch, 1 full bathroom, two bedrooms (one with Full size bed, the other a Queen size bed). The upstairs is one room with a futon couch, a small “office nook” for writing or computer work, plus a ½ bathroom (sink and toilet) and washer/dryer. The backyard has metal fire pit with a protective screen cover, perfect for evening camp fires. Cell phone reception is good, depending on carrier. We have Internet connection & WIFI, and guests working remotely have not reported any problems.

For other entertainment: We have a 19" DVD player / Monitor in the upstairs room, along with a small library of DVDs (a mix of children's movies, old-time classics, sci-fi monster movies, contemporary dramas, comedies and documentaries).

We also have a selection of games: Deck of Cards, Back-gammon, Chess Board, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Quiddler, and some puzzles.

Guest access
The entire house and yard are available for guests, including full kitchen (includes blender, toaster oven, microwave, coffee maker, juicer), washer/dryer, towels, and linens. The private backyard has a fire pit (we supply split wood) and a small charcoal BBQ grill (we do not supply lighter fluid or charcoal briquettes).

Other things to note
Cleanliness has always been top priority for us, but it’s even more critical during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. We have adopted enhanced cleaning practices, with extra attention to cleaning and disinfecting, especially frequently touched surfaces. We have a minimum 48-hour period between reservations to allow us to properly clean and ventilate all rooms in the house.

We do not have specific check-out rules, but we do request that guests leave the house generally as they found it. We do not charge a cleaning fee. Although we do not expect quests to launder sheets, towels, pot-holders, etc, we do expect the oven, countertop, refrigerator and other appliances in the kitchen to be cleaned, and dishes washed. There is a vacuum in the hallway closet, and cleaning products under kitchen and bathroom sinks.

ASA House has a 40-gallon hot water tank, which is average for house this size, but not enough if 3 or 4 guests take long hot showers back to back. It is usually not a problem, but best to allow time between hot showers, or limit the shower time.

Location

Schroon Lake, New York, United States

This cozy solar powered home is perfect year-round getaways. We are a 4-hour drive north of New York City, 2 hours south of Montreal, Canada, and 1-hour drive to Lake Placid and the Adirondack High Peaks Region. We are 3 miles from the town of Schroon Lake (Grocery, Post Office, Gas Station, liquor store, Strand Movie Theater, restaurants, etc.).

You won’t have to venture far from the house for an Adirondack Wilderness experience! Our country home is situated on 10 acres at the dead-end of a country road, just on the northern edge of the Pharaoh Wilderness Area. Alder Meadow Creek runs along the south end of the property, where spring migration brings a wide variety of water fowl. Great Blue Herons and warblers reside throughout the summer, and we often hear loons as they fly over between their summer habitats of nearby lakes. Another delight for birders: throughout the woods you’ll hear songs of the Hermit Thrush, Eastern Phoebe, White Throated Sparrow, Oven Bird, various wrens, woodpeckers, and more. Evening brings hoots of the Barred Owl, Saw whet Owl and Great Grey Owls, as well as bull frogs, peepers and chirping tree frogs, and of course, the crickets. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible.

Trailheads into the Pharaoh Wilderness Area are just a 5-minute drive away, leading to an expansive network of hiking and x-country ski trails. The Schroon River and Schroon Lake are popular canoe and kayak destinations. The Schroon Lake Marina (5-minute drive) in town rents canoes, kayaks and motor boats by the day, or by the hour. The nearby Schroon and Ausable Rivers are popular for Fly Fishing. The Town of Schroon has a lovely park with a great view of the lake, including picnic tables, a sandy beach swimming area staffed with a lifeguard, as well as nearby tennis courts and golf course.

For winter skiing - Gore Mountain Ski area is a 40-minute drive, Whiteface Mountain Ski Area one hour. If you want to mix your wilderness experience with Music & Art - The Seagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake presents a summer season of theatrical performances for children and adults. The nearby Lake George Arts Project presents free concerts all summer in LG Shepard Park, and a nationally recognized Jazz Festival every September with world class Jazz performers. They also house a visual art gallery featuring regional and national contemporary artists, open year-round.

Artist, Laura, and Sam, scientist, share a love of art and the natural world. We are actively involved in the art & science communities. Laura’s artwork has been widely exhibited, and Sam’s work as a biologist has taken him across the globe, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, and many places in between. We now live on the property year-round, tend a large vegetable garden (sharing fresh produce, when available, with our guests), caretake 2 beehives, tap maple trees for syrup in the spring, and enjoy sharing this little slice of Adirondack paradise with visitors.
