Beautiful area

Guests love this home’s scenic location.
Escape to our handcrafted thatched roundhouse tucked away in the South Somerset countryside.

Nestled in a clearing and surrounded by 3-acres of wild Woodland, our secret hideaway is the most beautiful, peaceful place to relax. It's an ideal off-grid experience for anyone seeking the peace of a digital detox or couples on a romantic adventure.

The space
Our traditional thatched roundhouse is hidden away in a woodland glade, full of beautiful flora, fauna and wildlife. You're welcome to explore our 3 acres of woodland and open field, we've even set up some benches and stargazing points for you to discover!

The traditional roundhouse and woodland kitchen have all been hand-crafted by Tom Dunbar, a Master Thatcher and proper craftsman.

Inside the roundhouse, you'll find a comfortable double bed and romantic fairy lighting. Traditional thatch is a great insulator, so the roundhouse will stay lovely and cool on hot days and retain warmth on cool nights. There are also extra blankets and hot water bottles for colder evenings.

Try some rustic cooking on the campfire or on the stove in the woodland kitchen. Pans and griddles are all provided. We even have marshmallows for you to toast whilst you enjoy stargazing!

The woodland kitchen has a gas camping stove with a grill and a solar-powered fridge. It is well-stocked with crockery, cutlery and utensils.

There's a covered seating area (in case of wet weather) with a comfortable sofa and picnic bench. We've even included some books and games for you to enjoy.

There's also a wash station in the covered deck area and a solar-powered shower. The water is heated over the fire or stove, and the solar panel powers the pump, once the water is ready. Woven hazel screens surrounded the shower for complete privacy. We'll provide lovely, local soap and towels. A great off-grid experience!

Keeping with our sustainable ethos, may we introduce the tree bog! This is a compost toilet, surrounded by fast-growing trees. The trees utilise the waste for their growth, and they are then coppiced (cut back) regularly to provide firewood.

Our land is close to footpaths and bicycle routes, plus the River Parrett Trail. There are good local pubs for drinks and evening meals. Read more in our nearby section or ask us, we'd be happy to help.

Keep an eye out for all the local wildlife, including Tawny owls, many birds, butterflies, dragonflies and busy-bees.

Guest access
During your stay, you will have exclusive use of the thatched roundhouse, woodland kitchen, campfire, picnic area and close-by compost toilet.

Parking is available near our house with a short walk (300m) across a field and through woods to the Thatched Roundhouse. We'll provide a wheelbarrow for you to easily transport any luggage. If the weather has been rainy, we'd recommend bringing wellies!

Guests with limited mobility are welcome to drive up the track and park close to the roundhouse.

You will need to bring your supper (unless you're eating out) but all crockery, utensils and firewood are provided. Breakfast is included. Your breakfast hamper and fridge will contain lovely things such as homemade bread, a choice of cereals and local apple juice.

We also have a solar panel, which powers the lighting, charging points and shower.

If required, additional water, 240v electricity points and broadband internet access are available by our house. If you need anything else, please get in touch. We're very happy to help.

Other things to note
In case of wet weather, there is a two-burner gas camping stove with a grill in the woodland kitchen. Also good for boiling the kettle without having to wait for the campfire to get going!

Children can stay if you book both the thatched roundhouse and our grain store yurt together. Please see our separate listing or get in touch to discuss. There is also space on the floor of the roundhouse to make up beds for children, or you're welcome to borrow our travel cot.

Neighbourhood highlights

Our place is in Milton, a pretty tiny hamlet in South Somerset. It's picturesque, with gorgeous honey-coloured hamstone houses and countryside for miles.

Within a 5min drive, is the local village of Martock with a little coop supermarket, pharmacy, public house, butchers, bakers and a few other little independent shops. There are also takeaways available, including a great Italian Pizzeria (most are takeaway only).

If you fancy a day on foot, there are numerous walks and nature trails right on our doorstep. You can even reach the Somerset Levels and the River Parrett Trail by footpath out of Milton, ideal for a day's walk or cycling.

You could also pop on down to Langport (16mins by car), you can rent a paddleboard or canoe and explore the Somerset levels by river from Langport.

You can't visit Somerset and not try some cider! Our closest is Burrow Hill Cider. It's pretty famous for cider Saturdays, Spring blossoms and the local hill with 360 views of the area.

There are some wonderfully quirky places to eat nearby! Pop over to Brown and Forrest's Smokery in Hambridge to try their exquisite smoked goodies, including salmon, haddock and scrumptious smoke cheddar.

We'd recommend Pip's Railway Carriage Café with a refurbished train carriage and double-decker bus. You could also try Farm and Field Cafe near South Petherton. Booking is essential for both!

If classic pub is more your style, you could visit The Halfway House in Pitney, The Devonshire Arms in Long Sutton, The Barrington Boar or The Lord Poulett Arms in Hinton St George.

Within easy driving distance is Ham Hill Country Park, with a pub and glorious views across the Somerset levels. There are plenty of National Trust properties nearby, including Montacute House, Barrington Court, and Tintinhull Gardens.

For day trips out, you can easily reach Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole, Blackdown Hills, Quantocks, Exmoor National Park or even the seaside. We are just 20 miles from the beautiful Jurassic Coast with lovely clifftop walks and the (famous) seaside town of Lyme Regis.
