Stay in this wonderfully weird youth centre / eco-park / lagoon playground / lighthouse and get screamed at by some plaster fish. No seriously, you'll love this simple but decent place. A real bed in a clean, cool room in a very nice location.

The space

Apart from the aforementioned Fountain of Screaming Fish, the place is a marvel of things the state thinks should educate children, such as huge murals narrating Batticaloa's history, an auditorium and a library (note the stately portraits above the door). We'd go there if we were children!

The accommodation in itself is basic but pretty nice. There are three cool rooms with decent beds and private bathrooms available. No real eating facilities though, so grab your meals and water bottles from the town before heading to Kathir's.

Interaction with guests

Our hosts during the two times we stayed there were the venerable Mr Mahalingam and a young lady whose name we've forgotten... We took an instant liking to the grey-bearded Mr Mahalingam, whose soft, inquisitive eyes spoke in genuine wonder at what on earth had brought us to his realm. Both spoke some English and did their best to accommodate us, with great success, even though the place clearly doesn't see many foreigners.

Marten of Neverbeen was helpful and prompt in answering any questions I had prior to our departure. On arrival the staff was welcoming with warm smiles. The room was fairly basic, with a double (and single) bed, mosquito net (a necessity), and two ceiling fans. It was difficult to cool the room down, although there are fans and several windows that we left open during our stay. The location is a bit further from the town than I realized, but it was situated in a very pleasant and quiet neighborhood. Future guests may find it helpful to eat dinner or grab food in town prior to heading to the hotel - we were unable to find a meal anywhere within a 30 minute walk (few kilometers) towards town. However, we did find some delicious short eats (snacks) in a pop up stand about 15 minutes down the road (the family making and selling them were delightful; I don't think they often run into foreigners looking to buy their food).

Wonderfully weird is situated in a quiet, nice neighbourhood; its back fence facing the lagoon. It is about 4km from town where a few restaurants can be found. The staff here speak broken English but try hard to respond to your requests ie. Organising tuk tuks. They are very nice people. The rooms here are nice too. The triple room is spacious while the double room is quite small. Each room has 1-2 ceiling fans which provide some relief from the heat and stuffyness. We found that we had to leave our bedroom door open as long as possible into the night to let some cool air flow in. Wonderfully Weird makes a nice base for a couple of days to explore the nearby beaches and lagoon, and get a bus to Passikudah (45min) to see the beautiful, swimmable beach there.

Thank you Neverbeen team for the good service! I would never have booked this trip to Batticaloa without your help. The Location was 'Wonderfully Weird', but it is the most beautiful spot in town. Mr Mahalingam (the manager) gave me a trusted welcome and helped me getting a good boat to explore the lagoons. Unfortunately i have to go home, because i just found out that the neverbeen team has more locations along the east time!

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
