Stay in this wonderfully weird youth centre / eco-park / lagoon playground / lighthouse and get screamed at by some plaster fish. No seriously, you'll love this simple but decent place. A real bed in a clean, cool room in a very nice location.
Apart from the aforementioned Fountain of Screaming Fish, the place is a marvel of things the state thinks should educate children, such as huge murals narrating Batticaloa's history, an auditorium and a library (note the stately portraits above the door). We'd go there if we were children!
The accommodation in itself is basic but pretty nice. There are three cool rooms with decent beds and private bathrooms available. No real eating facilities though, so grab your meals and water bottles from the town before heading to Kathir's.
Interaction with guests
Our hosts during the two times we stayed there were the venerable Mr Mahalingam and a young lady whose name we've forgotten... We took an instant liking to the grey-bearded Mr Mahalingam, whose soft, inquisitive eyes spoke in genuine wonder at what on earth had brought us to his realm. Both spoke some English and did their best to accommodate us, with great success, even though the place clearly doesn't see many foreigners.

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.
We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.
As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.
In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.
The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
