Spenge is located in Wittekindsland, which is the area between Wiehengebirge in the north, Weser and Weserbergland in the east and Teutoburg Forest in the southwest. It is characterized by gentle hills, woods, meadows and fields.

Wittekindsland includes the cities of Bünde, Enger, Herford, Hiddenhausen, Kirchlengern, Löhne, Rödinghausen, Spenge and Vlotho.

According to legend, the Saxon Duke Widukind (formerly Wittekind) rode a black stallion before his baptism, then a mold. The black horse is now found in the coat of arms of Herford County, the white horse in the coats of arms of Westphalia and Lower Saxony. The remains of the Duke rest in the Collegiate Church of Enger, about 6 km away.

Around 1900, Bünde, about 12 km away, was the center of the German cigar industry.

180 million years ago, there was a warm sea here. During this time clay shale was deposited, today there are still mineralizations of snails and shells, etc.

The decline of ice about 70,000 years ago resulted in the Teutoburg Forest and Wiehen Mountains, the rivers Aa, Else and Werre as well as countless streams. Everyone's flowing into the Weser.
