House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

A unique property on an acre of land in NW CT. Very peaceful location. It's a great balance of access to water sports and access to pristine nature.

The space

This is a very unique property. It is a converted ice house (originally built in 1840s and converted in 1940s) complete with thick oak-paneled walls, fieldstone fireplace and lofts. It sits on an acre of wooded property and is very private. It is a short walk (3-5 mins) to the waterfront on the East Side of third bay of Highland Lake just down the road. The waterfront area is a peaceful little piece of forested land right on the water with a dock and swimming area. If you have a motorboat, you can tie it up safely at the dock. You can also launch our canoe or sailboat from there.

It's the best of both worlds - you can swim and paddle all day but then unplug from the lakeside hubub, return to the woods in the evening and relax with the sound of crickets and toads.

Guest access

The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook & enjoy your meals. There is a gas BBQ on the outdoor deck.

Other things to note

We had a great time at Mary Ann's place. She was very welcoming and her brother helped us set up the sailboat to take out onto the lake. The dock is very relaxing to hang out on. Would definitely stay here again.

The Ice House was so, so beautiful, spacious, and had very cabin-y feel to it, which is exactly what we were looking for. Mary Ann was easy to get in contact with, and she was extremely helpful and answered all our questions. Her house is fully equipped with everything we needed and we had no issues. We had an incredible time. Thank you so much!

The Ice House was such a unique and wonderful getaway. Mary Ann was so helpful and very thorough. We couldn't have asked for anything more.

Mary Ann was great to work with; she was consistently and quickly available for all our questions throughout the process, leading up to and during our stay. She even kindly alerted a neighbor that we'd be there so that he could help with the snow plowing and sanding. The cabin is lovely, and the wood stove added a great touch on our winter nights. It's perfect if you're looking for a rustic getaway. If you're coming during the winter, you may want to come in a car with 4x4 or otherwise good snow handling to get up the road. We're looking forward to coming back during the summer when we can take full advantage of everything the area has to offer.

Kendra was a great guest! She and her husband were easy to communicate with and left the house tidy and organized. They also had some constructive notes for me which I have implemented to improve the stays of future guests!

What a wonderful place the Ice House is. Mary Ann was fantastic, right from the start, with our reservation being very last minute, she was extremely accommodating. The house was perfect for our getaway, with everything we needed, clean, peaceful and relaxing. The kids especially loved the loft areas! We spent the whole time on the dock & the lake in the canoe and with the kids in their new (URL HIDDEN) fun! We took sleeping bags for ease of bed linens, we grilled a few times on the grill at the house, and ate out a couple of times too. Noli's was a great recommendation, and we also went to Quercibella's in New Hartford which was well worth the drive - amazing food & service. Morsel & Munk was a fabulous store for watersports gear and other fun stuff, well worth a visit. The sun didn't shine for us but we still had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend the Ice House! Thank you Mary Ann for being such a gracious Host, and to Joe for his departing conversation!

We spent a week at the historic ice house. The house itself was very comfortable and clean. Mary Ann was very responsive to our email inquiries, and if we had needed assistance with the property her family apparently lives near by and could have helped, although we didn't need anything. We didn't mind the short 5 minute walk to the other property where we used the dock and canoe. The road around the lake was quiet, we were able to run around the lake with our dog--probably 6-7 miles around. The closest town is Winsted--a very quiet town, not very touristy (mostly pizza joints, a dairy queen, pawn shops, antiques etc). We mostly cooked in (kitchen had all the tools we needed). We thought the nicest restaurant in the area was the West St Grill a short drive away in Litchfield. We brought our road bikes and particularly enjoyed the ride along both sides of the farmington river towards Riverton, and north of Riverton along Hogback road (decent hills). The People's State Forest was also just a short drive and was great for hiking and trail running. The lake was quite busy with boats around where this cottage is--not really safe for long distance open water swims, but we could swim near the dock. The one rainy day that we had the internet worked well enough to stream a movie on Netflix. There is a TV but we never used it (no cable, and we didn't bring any DVDs). The host has a great CD collection and we enjoyed much of her music! Overall this was a great relaxing, good value holiday for us.

I love this little house with lofted bedroom & rec room. Maryann answered all of my questions almost literally right away, when we had issues with the internet (which heads up is really spotty) I was able to contact someone right away who walked me through the whereabouts and how-to's. Not a ton to do in town, great little organic hippie store catered to all our needs. The lake is beautiful, the little private dock was perfect. Would recommend this as a perfect get outta the city little getaway home. My little baby and my dog and my husband all had a great fathers day!

Response from Mary Ann:
Hi Courtney, Thanks for the feedback. I apologize for getting back to you so late but I was on business in China and between awful internet and terrible time zones, this feel down on my "to do" list. I've been working with the local cable company to try and improve the internet situation there but, alas, being at the end of a dirt road is not working in my favor. I am trying, though! As for the cleaning fee, that's what the housekeeper charges me whether people stay a few days or a week. It's one of the reasons that I prefer to rent by the week. It amortizes a bit better that way! I am glad that you enjoyed the house and the waterfront, though, and that your family had a good Father's Day! I hope you have a great summer. Best, Mary Ann

I am a commercial producer working in NY and Los Angeles. I grew up in CT and spent my summers on Highland Lake. My family is still on the lake and I get back home every chance I get. It is my favorite place in the world.
