A charming, rambling house overlooking Kampala, Makindye Hill House offers affordable rooms to let in a green and pleasant compound with plenty of birdlife. Convenient for Kampala, but far from the city bustle, it's perfect for nature-lovers.

The space

Makindye Hill House offers the perfect escape from the city, near the city. Close enough to Kampala to be convenient yet you can fall asleep to the sound of the owls hooting, and wake up to the plaintive calling of one of our resident pair of sparrow hawks.

The room for this listing is a large double en suite room with private bathroom sleeping 2 people. We have other rooms of various sizes within the house, so rather than be put off by the calendar, it's best to get in touch and check with me direct.

We have a large kitchen, spacious and comfortable living room and most importantly, some great outdoor space: a vast dining table lines the terrace and a wooden deck, its roof lined in papyrus, extends into the garden area to offer relaxed seating around a dark wooden coffee table.

Parking is ample for those that have cars, and we have a list of friendly Boda (motorcycle taxi) drivers and special hires (car taxi drivers) that know the property for those that haven't.

The gardens include a vegetable patch, which Moses tends. If you would like to buy some herbs, salads or vegetables from him for a great price, just let him know.

He takes care of the compound and rubbish, and is on hand to open the gate for you whenever you are leaving or entering the property. Lucy is our housekeeper, and she will clean and do laundry on a daily basis for you - all included in the rent.

There (email hidden) router which does not come with any data loaded - but if guests would like to buy some data to use for themselves they are welcome to. It saves investing in an expensive dongle or wifi router if you are only in Kampala a short while.

Myself and my partner live on site, in a small apartment separate from the main house. One of us is normally around most days, but we will stay out of your way, unless you have any questions or problems.

Makindye is one of the last 'wild places' left within sight of Kampala's skyscrapers. The tall trees teem with birdlife, and it's not unusual to occasionally spot other signs of wildlife - late at night you might see the bushy tail of a Jackson's Mongoose as it rushes into the bush either side of the road.

Our height on the hill delivers practical, as well as aesthetic benefits. The air is clean (some mornings you can look down on the smog line overhanging the city centre). The nights are cooler - I have lived here for two years and unlike many a sweltering night spent elsewhere in Kampala, I have never once needed to run a fan.

And with cooler nights comes a distinct lack of mosquitoes. We get the odd one, but we are not bothered by them in the same way as neighborhoods in the valleys below are. All our rooms come with mosquito nets supplied, but nonetheless, it is nice not to have to spray oneself with gallons of repellent of an evening!

We have the contact details for several friendly and reliable boda (motorcycle taxi) drivers, and special hire (car taxi) drivers who know the property. The public bus stops (stages) and small shops are 10-15 mins walk away.

Central Kampala (Kololo, Nakesero) is about a twenty minute Boda journey away.

The house is most conveniently located for anyone wanting to access the southern areas of Kampala, especially Makindye, Ggaba Road (and the US Embassy), Muyenga (and International Hospital Kampala), Nsambya, Buziga and Bunga. It is also positioned well for quick access to the Entebbe Road.

We have three friendly dogs and one cat on site. They are not allowed inside the main house - but those with allergies should perhaps consider an alternative place to stay.

Beautiful setting, fantastic room and breathtaking views! Anne-Marie was only here the first evening but she made sure we had all the information we needed for an enjoyable stay (e.g. reliable bodas and taxis numbers). Thank you!

Staying at Anne Marie's place in Makindye was lovely. We were very well taken care of - Lucy the housekeeper was brilliant. The groundnut sauce she made was delicious! It was so calming coming back to the house after being in the busy bustling of central Kampala. The double en-suite was very comfortable and the veranda overlooked the garden and tank hill opposite. The beautiful garden was really nice to look out at in the mornings. It was also really great having the numbers if reliable drivers and boda bodas - I cannot recommend Ismail highly enough. Honestly- he was an actual life saver. I would definitely stay there again.

We were given excellent directions and guidance on getting to the house and were met on arrival by another guest as Anne-Marie was away. Clear instructions on the neighbourhood and numbers for taxis etc were provided . It was a safe property, very spacious, a nice private bathroom and comfortable bed! Fresh clean towels were appreciated. Like most places in Kampala there are night time noises of dogs and a mosque in the area but otherwise the room was great and would gladly stay again if needed when next in Kampala.

This was a perfect place to stay. It was safe and in a great location. The hosts were accommodating and flexible. The house manager, Lucy, was so sweet and made me feel at home. Even the dogs were wonderful! I'll definitely be back.

Anne-Marie was a great host, replied quickly to any email/messages and helped arrange arrival and departure. The property is beautiful! There are indeed tall trees and turacos! In fact, while sitting on the veranda it felt a little like being in a forest. There are three very friendly dogs and one shy-ish cat, all great company! The room was great! I was very happy to have chosen the double ensuite and would choose it again. I would recommend this property and would stay here again.
