Description

The space

North Star Horse Farm is a working farm. We offer riding lessons, summer camps, a growing equine therapy program, and ongoing horse boarding and breeding. Please do not explore the Farm without supervision; we would be happy to give you a tour when we have a moment!

In fact, we have guest stalls as well as guest rooms, so if you're traveling with a horse or three and want to stay close to them, you've found the perfect place to stay! (Additional charges will apply if your horse(s) also need to stay over.)

The two rooms we have for rent overlook some of the paddocks where we turn horses out daily. Each has ample closet space, a comfortable full size bed, drawer space, and a comfortable chair to relax in.

Linens are provided. For stays of a week or longer, we're happy to switch out your sheets and towels. You're also welcome to take advantage of our washer & dryer.

Guest access

Guests will have use of their room(s), the upstairs full bathroom, the kitchen (BYO food), the breakfast nook, and the front porch and back deck. Please check before using the living room and dining room, since we have a dog who loves going in there and chewing up whatever he can reach!

The basement is rented by another tenant, and the owner stays in the master bedroom upstairs. We appreciate your respect of those personal spaces.

Interaction with guests

It varies. No meals are provided, but you're welcome to use the kitchen (as long as you leave it as clean as you found it!). We have busy schedules to keep to, so the timing may or may not work out for us to spend much time with you while you're here.

The neighbourhood

It's rural out here for sure! There are farms and fields as far as the eye can see, but downtown Aurora is just 10 minutes away by car. Grocery stores and a small mall are just a couple of miles away.

Getting around

There's plenty of free parking on the farm, but little public transportation nearby. The La Fox Metra stop on the UP-West line is under 10 minutes away by car -- and the Aurora stop on the BNSF Metra is about 15 minutes away by car. Taxis are available at both train stations.

Other things to note

Riding lessons can usually be arranged with 24 hours notice. Lessons cost $40/hr per person, or $30/half hr.

House Rules

Please be courteous. If you'd like to bring a pet with you, please say so as soon as you get in touch so we can make sure they'll be ok (there's one very laid-back Weimaraner who lives here too).

Smoking is fine outside, as long as you're at least 25 feet from a building.

If you have any questions, just ask!

We loved staying on a working ranch. We also had riding lessons. If you don't like animals then this probably isn't the best place for you. Our host Suzanne was just wonderful and great for a chat. We stayed in winter and found the accommodation very comfortable and the house comfortably warm. We really enjoyed our stay.

Suzanne was very welcoming and made us feel at home. The setting is great for someone who doesn't like to be around lots of people.

Suzanne was very friendly and welcoming to me and my significant other. We had our puppy with us and she was very welcoming to her as well! The bedroom we stayed in was nice and the living area was comfortable. The only thing (and, maybe we just aren't used to it) is that the plumbing was well water so the water kind of smelled a little and wasn't ideal for showering for us.

Suzanne was absolutely wonderful. Our communication was pleasant, the stay was comfortable, and it was quite apparent that she really wishes her guests to enjoy their stay.
