Bougainvillea House is a white house shrouded in lilac and white bougainvillea flowers, and situated only 200 meters from the Indian Ocean and Lamu Island's pristine beaches. Let our very own cook, Eddie, cook and serve you delicious meals.

The space

The house contains three bedrooms, each with a large double bed (185 x 195 cm), a mosquito net and a ceiling fan. One of the bedrooms overlooks the small charming garden with a coconut palm. Each bedroom is connected via an outside terrace - look up once there to admire a ceiling of bougainvillea flowers! There is one bathroom with a shower and toilet. The living room is unpretentious and homey, furnished with a wooden dining table and chairs, wicker armchairs, a sofa and above all a beautifully preserved Lamu wall that is hundreds of years old and gives the room an historical feel.

The rooftop of the house offers relaxing days under the banana fibre ceiling, or on lounge chairs. Above all it offers stargazing at the wondrous Lamu night sky, unpolluted from surrounding light and with crystal clear views over the stars.

Eddie is the caretaker and cook of Bougainvillea House on Lamu and will prepare exquisite seafood including crab, prawns, lobster and fish, locally caught the very same morning. His coconut rice is the perfect complement. Some of the best mangoes and papayas in the world will be served as desert. He will of course accommodate to any dietary restrictions and requests by you.

You can write a list of things you want Eddie to buy, and inform him about what you would like to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He will prepare and serve the dishes unless you feel like doing so yourself. Discuss what you would like to eat for each meal, for example one day in advance, so that he has time to buy ingredients.

If you feel like buying your own sea food you can go to the fish market in the early morning to buy the catch of the day, fresh off the hook!

Guest access

You have access to the whole house. However please be aware of that we have one bathroom for all guests in the house.

Interaction with guests

If there are any problems during your stay you can always speak to Eddie who can try to help you.

Otherwise you are welcome to contact us via a message here on Airbnb. Once this is done an SMS is sent to our mobile phone in Sweden, which informs us that there is a message pending on the website.

Other things to note

PLEASE READ THROUGH SPECIFICALLY THIS SECTION

All currency is written in text as Airbnb hides them if they are figures.

Upon your arrival, Eddie will meet you at the airport on Manda island with a sign. He will have rented a boat from Lamu island to take you back. The cost of this boat is about one-thousand-two-hundred KES which is to be paid by you as guests.

There is no internet access in the house however Peponi Hotel is around the corner and offers wifi access.

Should there be a power cut we have a backup generator.

There is no heated water in the house however water from shower and taps is warmed naturally by the sun in a tank on the roof. We are looking into installing heated water, however this is not in place yet.

If your party consists of 4 or more, we will hire a second staff during your stay so that we can better accommodate your needs. The extra cost for this is automatically regulated via Airbnb.

No food is included in the pricing. Eddie can however purchase and cook your meals. You can choose to give him the money for this before or after he has done the shopping, in any case discuss with him about what suits you best. Alternatively you can buy food yourselves and Eddie can prepare them for you. My best tip is to communicate with him.

Before your arrival, Eddie will have bought food in preparation for lunch or dinner depending on what time you arrive. He will give the receipt to you and you will then have pay him the equivalent amount. Neither Eddie nor us charge any extra for this and he is trustworthy so please do not worry about this.

Food costs between one-thousand-five-hundred, and three-thousand KES for three meals, per person, per day. The price varies depending on the food you want. No drinks are included in that estimation. Eddie is the best source of this information.

Your first day is usually more expensive. Extra things need to be bought that last for the duration of your stay such as butter, oil and milk. Coconut and lime are very cheap but seafood prices vary of course depending on what you order from Eddie. I generally suggest you tell Eddie to buy a certain fish/seafood according to you budget.

If you do not want Eddie to buy anything before your arrival I suggest Peponi hotel for your first meal. Please just inform me about this in beforehand so that I can inform Eddie not to buy anything.

Eddie lives far from our house. His trip home is dangerous if its too late in the evening. Therefore please be informed that dinner is served between 6 - 6:30 PM. Eddie will have to leave at the latest 7:30-7:45 PM to make it home with the regular transportation.

If you want him to stay later he can do so but then please communicate this with him in beforehand. It will also imply a cost of one thousand KES for you as he needs to go home with the alternative buses, taxis and boats that are more expensive. This money has to be given to him in cash. However if he leaves the regular time it will not cost you anything extra.

Eddie works hard and is at your service every day of your stay. He is without a doubt trustworthy and has worked for us for over fifteen years. As a token of your appreciation, he as well as the eventual second staff will be happy to receive any tips at your discretion.

My wife and I stayed in Charlotte's Lamu house on our honeymoon and found it to be every bit as romantic and relaxing as the pictures and description suggested. We were there during Ramadan and the low season, so a few of the main spots in Shela were closed. But Eddie cooked us wonderful meals at home and arranged sailing and walking tours and whatever us we wanted and we could not have had a nicer time. The house has an amazing indoor/outdoor flow, and the upper stories catch a great breeze in the evening, perfect for a cocktail after a day of exploring Lamu Town or wandering on the nearby beach and sand dunes. Eddie keeps the house very neat and it is perfectly furnished with just enough to enjoy your trip while giving you space to spread out and appreciate the architecture. We want to go back as soon as possible!!

My son, his partner and I had a wonserful holiday at Shela experiencing a different view of living, the beautiful sea and beach, and the comfortable space of the house. We enjoyed peaceful mornings and evenings on the rooftop terrace and a relaxing coolness in the dining /living area. Eddy cooked tasty meals (ginger crab is to be recommended) and was very helpful and pleasant.

Totally exquisite. Would call it paradise! Charlotte was amazing, very responsive and made sure we were well cared for. Eddie is a gem. What an amazing caretaker. He made us feel at home and there was no limit to his kindness. What an incredible cook as well. The people in the island are as genuine as it gets so very easy not to want to leave after a couple of days. Safety not an issue. A totally relaxed environment. Will come back as soon as I can. 100% recommend!!

Eddie was there to greet us at the airport and take us back to the house. We had a lovely stay - the house was incredibly beautiful, clean, and we loved that it kept it's old charm. The roof top was a beautiful place to relax and see the stars. Eddie was friendly and organized everything for us that we wanted to do. Definitely recommend the sunset Dhow ride. I'd also take a trip to Lamu Town but you could probably walk around yourself and don't need a guided tour. Eddie offers to cook which was nice for some meals, but definitely have some meals and cocktails and Peponi!

What a phenomenal place! Shela is magical and the house is situated in this delightful small town surrounded by a maze of streets and donkeys! Eddie is fantastic, he cooks awesome food and makes your stay welcoming and unforgettable. One day he even walked and chatted with us all the way to Lamu Town. We would recommend this place and Eddie to anyone who wants an unforgettable stay in Shela! Thank you. We'll definitely be back :)
