In a secluded young orchard overlooking an organic meadow stands our beautiful shepherd’s hut. With a small shower en-suite, fully-equipped kitchen and electric heating, you’ll have everything you need for a toasty-warm, very special stay. Pull up a chair before the Hobbit wood burning stove and revel in the cosiness, or snuggle into feather bedding dressed with scrumptious organic linen. Open the stable door and listen to the stillness of the starry evening and discover something magical!

The space
In the kitchen you’ll find a full sized oven, two ring halogen hob, microwave, ceramic sink and full sized fridge with ice box – everything you need to design dinner for two. The shower room has washbasin, heated towel rail, toilet and a shower fed from the large hot water tank with immersion heater – ensuring there is oodles of hot water. The shepherd's hut has underfloor heating and an electric radiator, so you'll be cosy whatever the weather.

Birds foot trefoil, oxeye daisies and wild carrot stud the grass between young fruit trees where the hut stands. This is the Croft, once the paddock where the Victorian farmer kept his horse, with a shallow stream at one end. Wildlife passes through this still haven; hare, deer, fox and badger. Sit quietly surrounded by birdsong and the murmur of the gentle running stream.

Embracing our green ethos, the shepherd’s hut is a well-insulated, energy efficient little home running on green electricity. We’ve tried to keep it local; joiners Scott and Scott from Derek Allan, Belford, enthusiastically and skillfully brought our imaginings to life, aided by other local craftsmen, and a great Douglas Fir was felled for our chassis at Abby St Bathans. We’ve used beautiful environmentally-friendly paints and oils; Farrow and Ball, Osmo and even a recycled New Life emulsion, and carefully chosen organic cotton towels and bed linen. We want our shepherd’s hut to sit gently in the environment.

Guest access
Hunting Hall has lots of footpaths to help our guests discover more about our beautiful countryside. Beyond the orchard where the shepherd's hut stands is the Pond Field where Tom grazes his flock of organic sheep, including rare breed handsome Teeswater ewes with comical dreadlocks. Stroll around the field footpath that leads to a wild pond with a bird hide and small dipping platform where you can sit and watch dragon flies flit between the reeds.

Neighbourhood highlights

We’ve created a farm trail to help you explore Hunting Hall – a truly magical place! Take a stroll to the woodland, bird hide and pond where you can try pond dipping. Seats along the way overlook a bird scrape, organic meadow and wildflower area. Over 100 heritage fruit trees are planted in our community orchard which has fabulous views across to the sea from the belvedere. It’s an easy walk across the fields to the local village to buy groceries from the corner shop or enjoy a meal at The Black Bull.

Visit the island of Lindisfarne, once an important centre of English Christianity. In the stillness of evening voices of seals resting on sand banks drift across the water to the island. A castle rises out of the rock, once guarding the harbour entrance.

A boat trip from Seahouses to the Farne Islands to see seals, puffins and sea-birds is an exciting adventure. In the spring cliff ledges house thousands of nests and the puffins, with their clown like beaks, bob around the boats.

Northumberland’s beautiful sandy beaches are overlooked by spectacular castles. Enjoy an evening excursion to Bamburgh where the great castle illuminates the sparkling sand, whilst out at sea lights glint and glimmer – an enchanting experience.

Alnwick castle captivates children – here Harry Potter learnt to fly! The Alnwick Gardens showcase stunning planting schemes, a tree house restaurant and water features which will intrigue all ages. Discover the dark mysteries of the Poison Garden!

The wild Cheviot Hills offer breath-taking views of untamed moorland. Walks starting in beautiful valleys with tumbling clear streams, quickly rise onto bracken covered slopes grazed by native sheep. Pause by a sun-warmed wall and enjoy the wildness.

It’s a lovely walk to Cuthbert’s Cave where the monks carrying St Cuthbert’s remains are said to have rested beneath the rocky outcrop. Nestled in the shade of woodland along a track lined with daffodils, the cave offers peace and a place of wonder.
