The Loreley valley on the middle Rhine is a UNESCO world heritage side.
It is a stunning area with beautiful views and around 40 castles on both sides of the river as well as romantic villages with ancient timber framedhouses. You can climb the famous RHEINSTEIG path in the very vicinity. Many ship cruises on the Rhine from Koblenz to Mainz stop here.
The region hosts festivals nearly all year round in the open air theatre of the Loreley and also a summer toboggan run. Additionally, every September the fascinating show “Rhein in Flammen” takes place here. The ancient old town of St. Goarshausen is also a must for all visitors. For water sports enthusiasts there is an indoor swimming pool in St. Goarshausen-Heide or the more adventurous ones can do rafting on the river. And there is not to forget to mention the gorgeous three-castle-view from Patersberg.
An interesting, romantic and varied jouney, which is always worth doing and will remain unforgettable.
A short history of the Loreley mythology: The Rhine is beside Donau, Rhone and other rivers a remnant of the prehistorical primeval ocean of the ice ages, which covered for millions of years nearly whole Europe and disappeared finally thru up folding of the Alpes, Its fountain lies in the Alpes and runs down to the northern sea.
In his middle part the river is borded on both sides with steep hills: the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge. The most narrow part of the whole river is the Loreley with a steep rock of 132 m height.
Because of the narrowness and very sharp curves the current there is very strong and dangerous, which makes navigation very difficult and had already many sailors killed in accidents by drowning.
These many fatal accidents founded the mythology, that a fair haired girl sitting on the pinnacle of the rock combed her long blond hair and singing captivating sounding songs. Thus she enchanted the sailors and lured them into their ruin, because they were distracted from meticulous navigation, crashed with their boats against the rock and drowned.
The Loreley is the most gorgeous part of the whole Rhine and a UNESCO world heritage side.
International events of the open air theatre 2019: the Kelly family concert on 8.6., the Fantastic 4 on 19. – 21.7., Night of the Prog Festival, German tattoo show on 7.9.

I nostri 3 figli vivono all' estero. We are an retired couple with a young dog. Our 3 children live abroad. In leisure time we prefer reading Italian or English books. Furthermore we like eating international food and enjoy the unique view on to the Rhine river in St.Goarshausen or at the Loreley with a tasty glas of wine or a book.
