The space

Bright and warm country family home with patio and large garden, close (30 mins) to Galway city; near the lively village of Kinvarra. Just 3kms to Galway Bay for swimming at the local pier, and have bicycles which guests may borrow. We love cooking - our guests seem to love it too; 20 mins drive to walking in the Burren. We share the house with two small, friendly dogs, and enjoy visiting Kinvarra for the music at weekends.

The area is rural and safe with several good walks locally and further afield, such as Athenry Woods, Coole Park. The local village of Kilcolgan is 5 minutes by car, 15 by bike. There are also nearby beaches for swimming. At low tides you can visit the deserted village on Island Eddy out in the bay.

Guest access

Guests share the home, garden and patio, and may borrow our bicycles. You can eat with us of an evening - typically a starter and main course - for around 20 euro pp, but bring your own wine! This is a non-smoking house; however, smokers are welcome if they smoke outside. It is a rural community, so nights are generally safe and quiet but, hey, if you're out for a pint or two locally, let yourself in quietly, no problem.

Interaction with guests

We live here so guests share the family atmosphere. Guests share breakfast and may accompany us walking and swimming. If pre-arranged they can enjoy an evening meal with us (18 euro pp) comprising local seasonal delicacies (eg: oysters, mussels, nettle soup). We are good cooks. I have fairly extensive knowledge of the local history which I love to share.

The neighbourhood

Overlooking the 6th century church at Drumacoo (see Wordpress for more info), this is a quiet rural road close to Galway Bay. A short drive or cycle to nearby Kilcolgan for local amenities including buses to and from Galway so one can enjoy the buzz of the cityand its racing and arts festivals and escape to a rural idyll. Ideally located for tours of the Burren National Park and other excursions. The area provides for swimming, walking, kayaking, horse riding, cycling, and a short 20 minutes drive to Oranmore golf club. Visit for further details and photos.

Getting around

The nearby village of Kilcolgan (accessible by walking, or we could lend you a bike, or hitch a lift) has bus access into Galway and other towns as well as the Burren National Park. Local taxis are readily available. Locally, hitching is normally do-able and safe.

Other things to note

We love hill walking in the locality and guests are welcome to join us and to enjoy a pint in a local pub at the end of a climb.

Giles was very responsive in providing me with detailed directions before I arrived and the entire family made me feel welcome when I came. The gourmet dinner I chose to partake in was amazing and with great company; thank you Giles and Ruth! The location was peaceful and unique, and I quite enjoyed tromping around the local attractions the following day.

Giles and his son are awesome hosts. We stayed at their place for 2 nights and enjoyed it from the first minute until we drove away from the yard. The house is beautiful and bright, the people are lovely, kind and very helpful. We felt more like family members than as guests. We really hope to see them another time, be it in Galway or at our place.

We had 2 lovely days on the Irish west coast and were fortunate to stay with Giles and his wonderful family. We had a great dinner with them the first evening and got really good advice about how to spend the next day. The room was nice and clean with a private WC and we enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the mornings.

Where to start? Giles and his lovely family welcomed me as if I were one of their own. This Airbnb experience was unique in that it felt less like staying at a B&B and more like coming home from a few months at university. They welcomed me to their table for dinner and our conversation drifted late into the evening over a bottle (or two) of wine. It became apparent that I wasn't the only one of their guests who've had similar experiences, several of whom still keep in touch with Giles and Ruth. Moreover, their home is lovely and nestled in the beautiful countryside around the Burren. Don't pass up an opportunity to stay here if you are in the area!
