Port Haywood, Virginia, United States

Mathews County is surrounded by water, rich with history and home to many artists. The town of Mathews has all of the basics (grocery store, laundromat, bank, pharmacy, etc.) along with several locally-owned restaurants, an active farmers market, antique shops, used book store, and art galleries.

The Paddler's Rest is situated down a lane about half a mile from a country store that has prepared foods, a wine cellar, craft beers, fishing gear, bait etc.

Cyclists and bird watchers might be interested in visiting the New Point Comfort lighthouse (5 miles) and Bethel beach (6 miles) as destinations. Paddlers can explore the history of the area by water using the Blueways Trail maps. Williams Wharf, the tide mill at Poplar Grove (owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono) and Mathews Courthouse are all easy paddling destinations from the Paddler's Rest.
