Come to Karekare Eco Retreat and feel the tranquility wash over you.
Nestled a short walk away from one of the world's best beaches and a short drive from Auckland, you will be immersed in lush native bush and birdsong. Sun-drenched large sliding doors look out from the living area over a peaceful, forest valley. Enjoy a wine on the deck or a hot outdoor bath surrounded by towering Kauri & Rimu trees.
Close to Piha and walking distance to unbeatable trails, streams, waterfalls & sunsets.

The space
At the Eco Retreat I'm trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Water is supplied through a rain water tank system and the house uses a composting toilet, which is both more eco-friendly and less smelly than a normal loo. But if you'd like to have a view while you poo there's a longdrop too!

While the Eco Retreat is not fancy by any stretch, the appliances are top notch, the towels are from good brands, and the pots and pans are good quality. I believe in buying good things once rather than replacing often just for the sake of something looking new.
There is a brand new and highly efficient heat pump in the house, but you are also welcome to use the fireplace to get super cosy.

Cooking basics such as oil, salt and pepper will be provided, along with a delicious selection of Nespresso coffee pods (which I ask that you put in the Nespresso recycling bag when used). If there is food left over from a guest feel free to use it, and pay it forward to the next guests!

The top terrace of the expansive veggie garden boasts a fully plumbed outdoor bath that provides one of the most relaxing experiences you could possibly imagine. Even better, the water drains out into an irrigation system for the garden. If there are any veggies that look particularly juicy please feel free to chomp away!
There is also an outdoor shower tucked underneath the house for if you need a quick rinse after the beach.

Karekare is close to the heart of Auckland city, yet it feels like you're a million miles away as soon as you duck off Piha Road and wind down towards the beach.
Karekare was voted No. 2 in a list of the best beaches in the world by Passport magazine. “Few stretches of sand have more personality than Karekare. Wild and gorgeously undeveloped, this famous beach has been the setting for on-screen moments from Oscar winner The Piano to Xena: Warrior Princess.”

Almost all houses in the area are unobtrusive and private, and you will often have the beach to yourself. There is a Surf & Lifesaving club that patrols the most popular area of the beach for swimming during summer. Please be careful in the water! The West Coast is known to be deceptively dangerous for inexperienced swimmers.

Hi! I'm from a farm in the North Island of New Zealand, but have been abroad since I was 17 to be closer to the professional tennis tour. I love good coffee, love going for a surf if I have the chance, and love having a singalong. I've had fantastic experiences with Airbnb around the world and am looking forward to sharing my own home with nature-loving guests. Cheers.
