The space
A quiet oasis of calm and privacy, The Garden Studio provides beautifully appointed and well equipped boutique accommodation for two people wishing for a private and independent base from which to visit River Cottage or explore the magnificent Devon/Dorset coast.

5 mins walk to shop, pub, tennis. Devon/Dorset. 5 mins drive to River Cottage. 10 min drive to beach.

Set in the desirable village of Uplyme, on the East Devon Way. Discover this rural idyll just a mile from the seaside town of Lyme Regis, famous for its beaches, footpaths and fossil-hunting. Tucked away down a private drive, The Garden Studio boasts a tranquil yet convenient location, a stroll away from Uplyme Village Green (with shop, pub and tennis court) and 45 minute picturesque walk along River Lym to the seafront. With the East Devon Way just at the end of the driveway, guests have immediate access to a vast array of footpaths and cycle trails - without the need for taking your car out!

Separate but adjacent to Coombehayes Barn, The Garden Studio is fully self-contained, offering ground floor accommodation, with its own private entrance, parking area and outdoor terrace. If you want to holiday with friends, we have another studio above - Lofty Hayes (sleeps two).

You have all you need to cater for yourselves, with kitchenette, dining areas inside and out. Luxurious ensuite bathroom with his/hers bath, separate walk-in shower and mood lighting. Sumptuous king-size sleigh bed in solid oak. Lounge area overlooking the garden, with cosy loveseat, armchair, coffee table and TV and Wifi. The quality Ruark sound system enables you to listen to your own music via Bluetooth.

With large patio doors, The Studio opens onto our pretty, bright, courtyard garden and guests have exclusive use of an outdoor patio area in which you can sit and breakfast ‘al fresco’. Many of our guests talk about relaxing in the evening, with a glass of wine, listening to the birds and gentle running water of our fountain, the central focus of this walled garden.

Lots of lovely walks from the door step:

The East Devon Way is just at the bottom of our driveway. It takes about 45 minutes to walk to Lyme Regis and the seafront along the pretty River Lym (much better than going along the road!). Turn right at the end of the drive and within minutes you reach Prescott Pinetum, a beautiful wooded walk with some ancient trees. This leads to Trinity Hill nature reserve with an array of pathways and cycle trails. Our favourite walk is at Ware (a 5 minute drive under the viaduct). From here you connect with the South West coast path where you can go right on the Undercliffes path to Seaton or left towards Lyme and down steps through the woods to reach Monmouth Beach and to walk along the Cobb, the wall surrounding 13th century harbour.

Within a 15 minute drive of The Garden Studio, you can join the South West Coast Path at Charmouth and climb Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast. Alternatively, enjoy bird-watching in Seaton Wetlands with its 4km of level trails and boardwalk through beautiful marshland and reed beds along the River Axe.

As well as walking, there’s a vast array of other activities to keep you entertained during your stay - all within 15 minutes’ drive:

- Horseriding at Woodhouse Stables

- Paddle boarding - paddle board rental and lessons at Boylos on Marine Parade in Lyme

- Kayaking - hire kayaks at The Tackle Box on Marine Parade

- Nordic Walking with local expert Gillian Butcher

- Tennis by the village hall in Uplyme – just a few minutes walk away

- Fossil hunting – on Back beach or Monmouth Beach - do it yourself or hire a guide.

- Rib Rides – cruise along the Jurassic World Heritage Coast to Beer Head and back

- Deep sea fishing - fish for mackerel with Harry May Boat Trips

- Shooting at The Tunnel, the UK’a premier shooting centre

- Seaton Tramway - three miles of beautiful countryside along the Axe Valley.

- Crazy Golf - Langmoor Gardens, Lyme Regis

- Birdwatching at Seaton Wetlands - nearly 4km of level trails and boardwalk through beautiful marshland and reed beds alongside the river Axe

When It comes to eating, we are spoilt for choice with a splendid array of restaurants. We are just a few minutes away from River Cottage, HQ of celebrity chef, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Swim, The Lyme Bay or newly refurbished Pilot Boat are just a few eateries to be recommended along the seafront. Relax with a cream tea in the beautiful garden at the Alexandra Hotel or enjoy a traditional pub meal at The Talbot Arms just down the road in Uplyme.

Where you’ll be

Uplyme, Lyme Regis, Dorset, United Kingdom

The Garden Studio is situated just a mile from the sea, on the Dorset/Devon border, in the picturesque village of Uplyme, just above Lyme Regis. We are on a private lane adjacent to the East Devon Way and guests have easy access to a plethora of beautiful walks and cycle trails from their front door. It's just a 5 minute stroll across the field to Uplyme's village green, tennis court, friendly village pub and post office. Our guests love to take the scenic footpath into Lyme Regis, away from traffic, along the River Lym (40-50 minutes). We are 40 minutes drive from the City of Exeter (Devon) and larger towns of Dorchester (Dorset) and Taunton (Somerset).

The Garden Studio boasts a tranquil yet convenient location. Guests can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the pretty seaside town of Lyme Regis, but then retreat to this rural hideaway just a few minutes down the road. Away from the crowds, you can relax in the privacy of your own space - inside and out - with the gentle sound of the running fountain. Alternatively, enjoy a potter in our surrounding countryside, home to deer, foxes, pheasants and rabbits as well as an abundance of bird life.

If gastronomy is your passion, of course this area is home to celebrity chefs, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (River Cottage) and Mark Hix (HIX Oyster and Fish House), as well as a host of other quality eateries. Many of our guests find The Garden Studio an excellent base if attending an event or course at River Cottage - a few minutes drive up the road or a 50 minute woodland walk through Trinity Hill Nature Reserve.

Walkers, nature lovers, fossil hunters will all enjoy exploring the beaches and spectacular footpaths along the World Heritage Coastline. Twitchers will enjoy the bird hides at Seaton Wetlands or the popular bird-watching trips which give exclusive access to parts of the Axe Estuary via the Tramway.

This area also boasts a wealth of historical and literary links. Lyme was granted a royal charter by Edward I in 1284 and is famous for its fossils and paleontoligist, Mary Anning, as well as the Monmouth Rebellion and smuggling. This is also Thomas Hardy country and Lyme's Cobb harbour is featured in Jane Austen's 'Persuasion' and John Fowles' novel, 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'.

If you want action and adventure, there are plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, horseriding, kayaking, paddle-boarding, deep-sea fishing etc.. You can even try shooting at The Tunnel (10 mins drive), training centre for Team GB.

Hi! I'm married to Mike and we have 5 (lovely and very responsible!) children aged from twenty-three to fourteen. We live in a popular, little, seaside town on the south west coast of England. We are very involved in our local community - in the church and local schools.

Every Friday, we are preoccupied getting our neighbouring holiday home ready for our next guests. It sleeps 12 and has an indoor pool, so is very popular with multi-generational family reunions (grandparents, parents and kids!). We also enjoy meeting the couples who rent our two apartments - The Garden Studio and Lofty Hayes, which overlook our pretty courtyard garden. Being hosts, we know how important it is to look after the accommodation we stay in and we are always looking for tips as to how we can improve our own rental properties!

As a family, we love the sea and the mountains and all the activities that go with them - sailing, skiing, mountain biking etc.
