Location: Great. Great desert view. Great view of the stars at night Host: Friendly Property: Falling apart and house was teeming with bugs. Furniture had bugs hiding under the pillow and crawling out from under the carpet. I dont know how many spiders I killed in two nights but it was definetly more than I had the patience for. Blister beetles and spiders were in the bed sheets and on the towels. One of the guys actually got blisters on his back and chest from one of those beetles that wound up in his bed. While pulling the bedsheets for check out, a large spider scurried out from under the sheets I was sleeping on. Backyard patio furniture were completely dilapidated, the bench was faling apart, and chairs were rusted beyond belief.. I dont know how anyone would think it would be OK for a guest to sit in one of those tetnus buckets. One of the backyard lights did not work and the restroom door did not close. House looked like it was just falling apart. I dont know how old those pictures in the ad are, but I can assure you they werent taken very recently. I'm sure the property was well deserving of the ratings it had 1 year ago, but I feel as though no one has taken care of this place since.

Godwin ranch is a beautiful spot. A group of us had an amazing weekend here over Easter - lots of lovely spots to chill and a hot tub under the stars :) Nick is a great host and i sure we will be returning one day soon

Godwin Ranch is a great desert getaway! The place is comfortable and has nice outdoor space for lounging by a fire or swaying in a hammock. There is a gas grill and a well equipped kitchen for easy barbecuing. The house feels secluded, but it's close enough to town and to the National Park to let you keep busy. The pool is terrific. Unfortunately during our stay there was an issue with the hot tub (otherwise this review would be 5/5 stars), but Nick & everyone at Joshua Desert Retreats were very responsive and accommodating.

The place was very nice, comfortable with a lot of special touches. It was very relaxing and the pool (above ground) and jaccuzzi were nice as well as the outdoor hanging bed. The stars at night were spectacular. I gave it overall 4 stars because the place was so great and that is the most important thing when you get there. On to the check in and dealing with the host. This was the first time I had to sign an outside contract (not just the Airbnb agreement). It was 5 pages and they wanted a lot of personal information. I felt like I should have a lawyer review it, but did my best. It also felt very advisarial. They will charge you for every possible thing if you do something. $75 dollars if you don't leave the key (last time I made a key it was $2, so even $10 or $15 with the headache would be reasonable), $50 is you don't write in how much wood you used and $1.66 per log. There is a $100 cleaning fee, but if you don't leave it clean like you found it, they will charge you extra. I guess I paid $100 to wash the sheets and towels (seems excessive). The end result was a very nice weekend away, but the set up was stressful and it seems like they think their guests are criminals not guests. If I were giving stars for the house, it would get 4.5, if I were giving stars for the host and dealing with the business of renting it, I would give it 2 stars.

Response from Nick:
For potential guest looking to rent from us, yes our listing mentions we ask for a rental agreement to be signed in three locations so to not burden you after booking as if unexpected we require this information. Our agreement has been in use for over 20 years, we're not new to the vacation rental industry and found sites like AirBnB DO NOT cover all damages caused by a guest. We have lost many many thousands of dollars that the "HOST GUARANTEE" does not cover or is such a hassle that we now insist on our routine agreement is signed by all to not have to allow a third party dictate how we recoup damages caused by others on private property. Wish I could say our exchange with Motti was pleasant, seems the feeling is mutual. If you read further down into the reviews you'll see guest love me, Nick House, I can't begin to tell you how much as it will day a full day to read. But I assure you, I understand the agreement can be a hassle and do my best to streamline it when possible but when you're met with such resistance such as Motti I can understand where the frustration would come from. It truly is an easy process but if you want to make it hard that's for you to decide and entirely your decision to do so. Overall, Motti was a great guest no damage done besides leave me personally a bad review because he didn't read our listing details and entered into a requirement @ booking to sign an agreement. We really enjoyed ourselves! Being surrounded by vast desert views and the sight of both the sunrise and sunset were fantastic. It was perfect for two couples and one baby since the bunkhouse allowed for privacy. The front porch was our favorite spot to hang with its cozy seating and vibe. The drive to the town of Joshua tree was doable but a little bit longer than we would have liked (30mins to town of Joshua Tree).

What a fun and interesting place to stay! We stayed a couple of nights and was intrigued by the uniqueness of the property. The house is rustic, cosy with lots of charm and very well equipped. It is just as (URL HIDDEN) is as though you are welcomed into someone's home. My niece and nephew (aged 9 and 11) said the retreat was the best part of their trip to Joshua Tree with so much to explore on the property. We all particularly loved the swinging day bed, fireplace and the hot tub. Great place for star gazing!

I grew up in Hawaii, so I know about being connected to the natural life force of the land. I bought my first house in this area 20 years ago to use as a getaway with family and friends. They all said, "You're from Hawaii; what are you doing in the desert?" But the desert is very much like Hawaii; nature has been supported, not paved over. I soon started to rent out that house, buy others in the area, and now I own 14 desert homes that I rent out through my company, Joshua Desert Retreats. This area has become a destination for artists, but it seems like everyone in Southern California at one time or another growing up has gone camping in Joshua Tree National Park, so we get a lot of ex-campers, too. These house's technically isn't in any town, and getting to some requires driving along a dirt road. The town of Twentynine Palms is home to the main entrance of Joshua Tree National Park and only 15 minutes away from any of the properties.
