Breakfast
This is one of a few places in the area that has this feature.
Our house is 700 years old and full of historic character from its creaky beams to its Gothic arches. Located on the famous Church Square, we are right in the centre of Rye. Guests have exclusive use of the double-height medieval sitting room, newly-refurbished shower room, and two south-facing bedrooms with views across the marshes to the sea (either two doubles or one double, one twin). A continental breakfast is served in the timber-framed kitchen.

The space
The house was built at a time when merchants, monks and peasants walked the cobbled streets outside. When Rye was burnt to the ground by the French in 1377, it was the only house left standing because of its thick stone walls. Today, it is one of only a few medieval Gothic stone houses in the country. Our family has owned the house for 200 years and we strive to preserve its historic character while making it as comfy and cosy as possible. We fully refurbished the guest suite last year.

Guest access
Guests have exclusive use of our first floor suite. They eat their breakfast in the kitchen, but don't have access to cooking facilities.

At the Old Stone House, you are in the heart of the old town on a cobbled street. Great restaurants are five minutes walk away including the Landgate Bistro, the Fish Cafe and the Tuscan Kitchen. If you fancy a drink in a historic setting, the Mermaid Inn and the Ypres Castle Inn are two minutes away.

The 700 year-old Ypres Tower is at the end of the street. Opposite the house, you can climb up the tower of St Mary's Church for a view across the town and countryside. Lamb House (home to Henry James) is just around the corner. Wander the cobbled streets of Rye browsing antiques, home wares and art - and dropping in at local cafes.

Only a few miles from the town, you can visit Camber Sands, a three mile stretch of golden sand. Next door is the watersports playground of Broomhill Sands. Book your tuition at The KiteSurf Centre. A few miles further on is Dungeness, a shingle "desert" which has been a magnet for artists and photographers for many years.

On the other side of the town is the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve with rare bird life as well as lovely walks and bike rides which can include a visit to the ancient town of Winchelsea. The famous gardens of Great Dixter are only 10 miles away, as are Bodium Castle and the KESR steam railway. There are also vineyards to explore.

I'm Clare. I used to come to Rye on holiday when I was a child. Proud to be back running a B&B.
During your stay
I live in the house and am happy to chat or answer questions. But I give my guests lots of space so they can enjoy their holiday.
