Situated on Merano's main piazza, our flat offers a sophisticated ambiance, Italian design, and modern comfort. Its top-floor location and large windows flood it with light and afford sweeping views.

Though the flat itself is extremely quiet, just outside the front door you'll find cafés, boutiques, the bustling Portici Arcades, the Art Nouveau Kurhaus, Terme Merano, medieval city gates, and the famed Promenades, where spa guests have strolled along the Passer River for centuries.

The space
Our flat in Merano is all about location, style, and comfort.

The exterior of the building is, let's be honest, rather non-descript. But as soon as you walk into the flat, you enter an oasis of tranquility: you'll be immediately surrounded by beautiful wood-paneled walls that house a vast collection of art and design books.

The spacious living room boasts a large picture window, marble dining table with leather chairs, classic Italian design furniture, vintage lamps, high ceilings and a cozy fireplace done in 17th century Dutch Delft tiles.

Just off the living area, you'll find the TV room. This cozy nook can alternatively be set up as a second bedroom, equipped with a wide and comfortable Ligne Roset (160 x 200 cm) sleeper sofa. A heavy curtain may be drawn for privacy.

The kitchen is fully equipped, with granite countertops and high-end appliances; it looks out onto the Gothic St. Niklaus Cathedral and Palais Mamming Museum.

The master bedroom boasts a king bed measuring 180 x 200 cm, with a luxurious natural-latex mattress and high-quality sheets. The spacious master bath is done in high-grade Giallo Siena Marble and has a brand-new glass shower and separate WC cubicle. The second bathroom has a washing machine, dryer, and a small bathtub.

The sunny balcony overlooks a verdant park: a perfect spot for breakfast or evening cocktails.

Our building is located within the pedestrian-only zone inside the medieval city walls. But you'll have your own private parking spot in our underground garage, with an elevator that takes you directly up to the fourth floor. We'll register your license plate with the local authorities so that you'll be allowed to enter and exit the limited traffic zone during your stay.

Total surface area: 100m2

Other things to note
The whole apartment has a very personal and private atmosphere. We preserved the warmth of its interior, the vast but bright bookshelves, the precious marble bathroom and many little details that will make living this space, even for a short stay, a special and unique experience. Every detail in the apartment is the result of the love for art and design my parents always carried with them and transmitted to me. The last 15 years this was their cozy, bright hiding place in the historic heart of Merano..

Location

Merano, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Merano has been a favorite spa resort for the well-heeled since the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The town was built along the shores of the Passer River, and its crystal-clear alpine water is famously refreshing and cleansing. Merano's beloved traditional Christmas Market takes place along the promenades that run along both sides of the river.

Merano's climate is extremely mild and the sun shines up to 300 days a year. As a result, the vegetation is verdant and exotic, with palm trees juxtaposed against snow-capped Alpine peaks.

Our apartment is located just off of Piazza Duomo, the main plaza at the top of the Portici – a long, arcaded shopping street dating back to the medieval period, with upscale boutiques and cafés. The Terme Merano spa and pool complex is just a few minutes away on foot.

Though we are located right in the heart of the Old Town, there are several walking trails that begin a stone's throw from the flat: the steps that lead up to the Tappeinerweg Trail are just across the piazza and the trail that leads to the Gilf Cascade is just around the corner.

Slightly further afield: The chairlift that goes up to Dorf Tirol in the summer is just a few minutes away on foot. Sissi's Way is a lovely walking trail leading to the award-winning botanical Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle (open April to November). And the bus stop for Merano 2000, a hiking paradise in summer and a ski resort in winter, is located just steps away.

My wife Cassandra and I work in casting for film and television. She is American, and I grew up in Milan. But my mother is from Merano – so we've been here in South Tyrol with our children since 2008. Over the course of our lives, we've lived in New York, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, San Diego, Philadephia and Florence. We always treat homes we visit as our own, and frequently house swap with friends and acquaintances. We look forward to hosting you in our apartment in Merano!
