ROAD TRIP TO COLLIE! Why is Black Diamond Lake so blue?
WHY WA (travel series) Episode 6: Collie River

Things To Do and See!
Collie is a beautiful town with a coal mining heritage and a slogan which it lives up to: “More than you think”.

The town is surrounded by natural jarrah forest with bushwalking tracks, shady riverside picnic spots and scenic lakes. We have a plethora of perfect places to just wind down and get close to nature; Wellington National Forest, Harris River Dam, Stockton Lake, Minninup Pool, Black Diamond Lake, Glen Mervyn Dam and of course the Collie River!

We also have a first rate Motorplex facility that has something on every weekend, a speedway, mountain bike tracks in the centre of town for all levels, walking trails, bike paths all over town and all the way out to Allanson, BMX racing and waterskiing lakes.

Collie has a good range of sporting facilities including two golf courses, a large public heated swimming pool, canoeing, horse riding and a 24hr gym, or you may prefer a jog along the river bank.

For the spectators, we have the local football, hockey and cricket gladiators which do battle on most weekends according to the season, and the seasonal horse racing and trotting meetings.

While here take the time to see the historical swinging footbridge over the Collie River, the nearby arboretum, the art deco Miners’ Institute, and All Saints Church with its stunning mural.

There is plenty of shopping, eating spots and take-away food from fast food to dine in restaurants. We are also fortunate to have our very own local winery - Harris River Wines.

Oh yes, and the coal industry is still here. Coal Industry tours can be arranged (week days) for groups of 20 or more (buses only; no individual cars allowed). Conditions apply. You can also visit the museum and tourist mine, to see how it was done in the more modest style of a bygone era.

You can do just about anything, except get bored in Collie!
