Where you’ll be

Santana de Cambas/Mértola, Beja, Portugal

The historical city of Mértola, with its 5 museums, is at 15 kms of distance and the village of the Mina de São Domingos, with its impressive remains of mining archaeology, at 10 kms. Finally the mining port of the village of Pomarão, upon the Guadiana river, is at 6 kms only.
In the bathing season, you will have the possibility to take advantage of a large dam at 1,5 kms from the house, where you can swim and practice motorised nautical sports. The river beach of the Mina de São Domingos, with its magnificent white sand and a support coffee bar, is another option in the surroundings. All year long you can always try also to fish largemouth basses.
The village is located in the edge of the Guadiana Natural Park, where you can have access to the various pedestrian trails, such as the old railroad which used to link the Mina de São Domingos (former pyrites mines) to the river port of Pomarão or the charming pathway along the Guadiana River, with bits of a via romana, heading to the river city of San Lúcar, in front of Alcoutim.
From Mértola you can hire boat trips down the river Guadiana to Pomarão and Alcoutim, or instead do some canoeing along the old river mills or below the impressive Mértola medieval walls.
