Magpies and Butterflies is a beautiful old classic Dutch barge that has been lovingly restored to make it into a ‘country cottage on the water.’ *It’s available for moored overnight stays and also skippered river trips.* It’s a quirky escape away for those in need of something a bit different. Being on the water and surrounded by nature is not only relaxing but good for the soul! In a picturesque part of Berkshire, there are many walks, pubs, restaurants & art galleries to enjoy.

The space
*Why not enhance your stay with a river trip. On your check in or check out day, we can take you out on a 2 hour skippered river trip. If you would like to do this, please advise when you book and we will let you know the price*

*The boat will be moored at either Bourne End or at Cookham meadows*

The boat is perfect for a couple, although it can sleep up to four people. As you step aboard onto the wheelhouse, there is a seating area and a cabin leading down to the second bedroom. This room has twin beds.

In the main saloon, there is seating for 4, a dining table, a cosy wood burner, a small galley kitchen with two gas hobs, fridge and a Nespresso coffee machine with milk frother. There is also a bathroom which has a shower and a toilet. The boat is centrally heated using a special system that’s thermostatically controlled.

The double cabin bedroom can be found at the front of the boat and its doors can be shut onto the sitting room. This bedroom has very low head room but is really cosy once you’re in bed!

The boat is powered by solar which means that you need to think more carefully about the power you use when plugging in a hair dryer for example. This is a boat and the batteries don’t last indefinitely. Similarly with the water, whilst there is plenty for your stay, the tank can only hold so much so only using what you need and not wasting water comes into play here. Whilst it’s a great feeling to really appreciate the truly renewable resources of the boat and to be environmentally friendly, we do have a generator to charge the batteries and the water tank can be refilled if necessary so don’t worry.

Cookham is a beautiful village and a very picturesque part of the river Thames. There are lovely long walks to take along the tow path and into Cookham meadows. You can walk to pubs and restaurants from the boat with ease. A particular favourite of ours is ‘The Bel and Dragon’ who do a fabulous breakfast.

Cookham is also only ten minutes away by car from the village of Bray (or we can skipper you on the boat by separate arrangement) which has some of the best Michelin star eateries in the country such as Roux’s ‘The Waterside Inn’ and Heston Blumenthal’s ‘Hinds Head.’

You are also close to Marlow and Henley which are busier towns and well worth a visit. The boat is a great base for those taking a trip to Legoland or for visiting Windsor castle too.

Guest access
The entire boat is for our guests use. Please take care when waking around the boat or sitting on the decks as you are on the water.

Other things to note
Think practically when coming to stay. Whilst there is adequate storage for four people, think weekend bag rather than huge suitcase.

Cookham is a friendly village with lovely people. We often find people waking past the boat who stop for a chat. It’s a relaxed and happy atmosphere in the village and along the river.

My husband Edward and I are new to Airbnb but have loved hosting our cottage so far! It’s a lovely feeling to give people pleasure from a home that we enjoy and for us all be able to share in something that we think, is very special. My business is renting luxury serviced apartments in Central London, predominantly Mayfair and Knightsbridge. My husband is a business troubleshooter and advisor. We look forward to getting to know you.
