A comfortable and characterful cottage, close to Islay's most fabulous beaches

The space
On the edge of the small cluster of houses nestled on a low ridge with beautiful west-facing views over Loch Gorm to Islay's atlantic coast, Drumlanrig is an 1850s stone-built cottage providing spacious self catering holiday accommodation for up to 6 people.
The location is quiet and private without being isolated.

With two double and two single bedrooms, and two bathrooms, Drumlanrig accommodates up to six people in comfort.

The living spaces feature beamed ceilings, a farmhouse style kitchen and a comfortable lounge with a log-burning stove.  A glazed porch, with seating, leads to a secluded terrace with outdoor seating and table.  All have beautiful, uninterrupted views south and west over Loch Gorm towards Saligo Bay and Kilchoman; the sunsets are stunning.

There's an  upstairs playroom with cupboards full of toys and games and plenty of space for running around in the fenced garden to the south and west of the house.

The self catering facilities include: a range-style cooker with gas oven and hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, high chair, microwave, toaster, kettle and teapot.

The water comes from the deep underground well shared with our neighbours;  purified with  UV rather than chlorine, it is crystal clear and delicious.

With oil-fired central heating and double glazing, the house is very warm, but the wood-burning stove adds a cosy ambience on cool evenings.  The log shed is well stocked.

The television has satellite freeview channels and a DVD player.   A bluetooth receiver allows you to play your own music from your phones or tablets.  You'll find a selection of books about Islay and there are board games,  toys and books for children.                As on much of  Islay, wifi bandwidth is best suited to basic email and checking the weather.   Similarly, in common with many rural Islay houses,  mobile coverage is patchy and you may not get a signal indoors.  But there is a landline.

There is a bathroom with over-bath shower and a small en suite shower room; each has a toilet.

Two of the bedrooms - the ensuite double bedroom and a single bedroom - are downstairs, but with small steps to the en suite bedroom and also to the family bathroom.  Upstairs, the double bedroom, single bedroom and playroom have 'coombed' ceilings, so they are partly sloping and have velux windows.

Drumlanrig shares a driveway, parking and turning space with a small neighbouring cottage; there is room for you to park two cars here.   The house is reached via a stony track (pictured) shared by the seven other houses that comprise Carnduncan.

Where you’ll be

Within 5 miles of the house you will find:
two of Islay's most beautiful long, wild Atlantic beaches
stunning geological features
ancient standing stones, cairns  and medieval crosses
a poignant military cemetery
an RSPB nature reserve
trout fishing
an oyster farm selling oysters, in season
a small art gallery with a cafe and lovely bay
Bruichladdich distillery
Kilchoman distillery, with a cafe
a basic convenience store - and yet another cafe
. . .  and miles of beautiful rugged coastal land to explore, with burns,

rockpools, dunes, sandy and pebbly beaches and waves crashing onto rocks.

What you won't find:   are crowds, traffic jams or anything that smacks of hustle or bustle!

A Site of Special Scientific Interest surrounds Drumlanrig, indicating the outstanding landscape and wildlife of this area of Islay.    Even from the windows you'll see buzzards gliding across the lower-lying terrain and the sharp-eyed may spot a hen harrier,  barn owl or even a young golden eagle. From autumn, wintering geese circle in the sky.    Round at Loch Gruinart you'll see seals and perhaps otters.   In the fields are brown hare and roe deer.
