A BRIEF HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION
Capital of Tarragona province, it was established by the Iberians, a group that inhabited between the 6th centuries BC and II BC, and later conquered by the Romans who called it Tarraco and established it as the capital of the province of Citerior, and in the imperial era of the province of Tarraconeun province, making it one of the most important cities. In the 5th century it was invaded by the Germanicans and in the 8th century it was occupied and razed by Muslims. After a period of decline, the city's prosperity was restored in the 12th century, when it was occupied by Ramón Berenguer III el Grande, Count of Barcelona at 1109, playing an active role in the expansion of the Crown of Aragon during the 13th and 14th centuries, with large medieval constructions, urban expansion, and a municipal government. The great war convulsions of the 17th and 18th centuries and the general political fall culminated in 1811 in the French War. Its ultimate rehabilitation occurred in the middle of the 20th century. The city was declared the provincial capital and maritime trade, especially wine, defined the beginning of a new economic and urban expansion that the current city set up. The industrial boom of the '60s has represented a large demographic increase and has established the city as a tourist destination for its coast. In 2000, the archaeological site of Tarraco was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The construction of the Forum is located from the year 70 and the representatives of the cities of the entire Hispania Citerior met annually. The Provincial Forum consisted of 2 large plazas, one dedicated to imperial worship and the other to the administration. This second square was the largest in the Roman world and its vestiges can be found in much of the historic core.
Roman Circus: Building where horse and car races (beams and quádrigas) took place, built at the end of the 1st century AD, was part of the set of buildings linked to the council of the province that occupied the upper part of Tarragona. It had an extended shape about 325 meters long and up to 115 meters wide, and was about 30,000 spectators. City Hall: It was part of the ancient Roman Circus of Tarraco and was a convent. In 1669, the city's Magnificent Consuls donated the Dominic grounds into the Fountain Square for the construction of the new convent that began in 1693. In 1700 the 'Torre Gorda' known as the gunpowder tower that destroyed part of the convent broke out. In the War of Succession, Felipe V's soldiers used the building as a barracks. In 1813, in the French War, the church and convent were burned. The building was convent of the Dominicans until 1835 and 3 years later it was used as the headquarters of the Municipal and Provincial corporations. Its facade, by architects Barba and Rosell, from 1860, represents in a neoclassical style, different allegories from the history of the city and the province. AROUND THE CITY
Pedrera del Médol: Pedrera used since Roman times from which about 50,000 cubic meters of calcareous stone of myocene were mined, golden colors and mostly fossilos (lumaquela), with the exception of the most sandy parts, which do not have fossils, with the exception of the most sandy parts, which do not have fossils. On some walls of the quarry you can still see the system of removal of the ashtrays. The most emblematic element is the Needle of the Médol, a 16-meter column of high testament to the initial level of operation. The increase in humidity and greenery is also appreciable compared to the surrounding area, and also the acoustic properties of the Médol hole. It can be reached from the AP-7 highway (south direction) by the Médol area or from the road N-340: from the roundabout of La Mora, you must cross the highway and continue about 5 minutes walking towards Tarragona.
Arco de Berá: It was built in the late 1st century BC, more than 20 km north of Tarragona and commemorates the renovation ordered by Emperor Augustus of the road that runs along the coast from north to south and that went on to be called Via Augusta. It currently corresponds to the N-340 road and the municipality of Roda de Berá. It was decorated with Corinthian pilasters and moldings, and crowned with an architectrabe, fridge, cornice, and attic, preserved only in part. Torre de los Escipiones: Popular name that receives the funerary monument near the Via Augusta in the 1st century AD. The attribution to the Scipiones brothers comes from the ancient interpretation of the 2 relief statues that dominate its facade and actually represent the God Attis, a funerary divinity of Eastern origin.
Roman Aqueduct: Known as Puente del Diablo, it is a sign of the long channeling that brought water into the city from the Francolí River and one of the best Hispanic examples of arcade water supply. The water was collected in the Rourell area, 92 meters above sea level and driven more than 10 km through different pipelines and aqueducts of different measures. Built in the 1st century AD, it is made up of 2 arcade floors. In the Ferreres area, it has a length of 217 meters, a maximum height of 27 meters and a width of almost 2 meters. The upper row has 25 arches and the lower 11, with about 5'90 meters of light.
Villa de los Munts: Roman villa owned by an important character linked to the province's management, a display of the private luxury of the residences of the country aristocracy. It must have been built during the 1st century and it is believed to have been occupied until the 6th or 7th. It is located in Altafulla, 10 km from Tarragona, on a small hill near the sea. At the top of the hill are the cisterns that stocked it with water, and along the slope is the residential area and two sets of hot springs along the slope. The richness of the statues, pavements, wall paintings, mosaic emblems, and marble columns that have been found leave no doubt about the importance of their owners. In summer there's a staged visit.

It was built in the late 3rd century BC with large stone blocks, 6 meters high and 3 towers. In the middle of the 2nd century BC it expanded and it became 12 meters.
From the circus you can visit the area of the curve and the part of the bleachers in Plaza Sedassos and Calle Trinquet Vell, as many of its structures are located inside shops and houses in the area. This peculiarity makes it one of the best preserved in Western Europe.
Jewish Quarter: Protected by royal power, Jews settled in a short distance from King's Castle. The Jewish neighborhood was totally separated from the rest of the city and had only 4 doors communicating with the outside. In it were the houses of the Jews, small and with workshops on the ground floor, the synagogue, the oven, the bathrooms and the school. The Jewish Quarter came into decay from the 14th century, until the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. The halfway to the narrow streets and some arches pointed in Calle Talavera and Plaza dels Àngels is preserved.
Plaza del Fórum Provincial: Plaza where structures are located and preserved from the other end of the Tarraco Provincial Forum.
Gothic porches: In the middle of the top, the porches of Calle de la Mercería are an interesting example of Gothic civil architecture, built in the 13th or 16th centuries. All the arches are Gothic minus the last and the pillars are stunned to compensate for the house's tend to go down to Mercería Street. In medieval times, there was a market.
Cathedral: It began to be built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, continued in Gothic and consecrated in 1331, but was unfinished due to the Black Death. Highlight the courtyard, with a return staircase and Gothic columns and on the noble floor you can visit the different rooms with decorative styles basically from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is currently owned by municipal property and is open to the public as a museum, being the headquarters of the Tarragona History Museum.
Plaza del Pallol: With Gothic buildings on Roman remains of the Provincial Forum.
Portal de Roser and Walls: The gateway gives access to the town on the west side. It is flanked by the entrance to the Archaeological Promenade and by one of the six Cyclops gates practiced in the megalithic zócalo of the Roman wall.
Plaza de la Fuente: Located above the Roman Circus, it is from the 14th century. In the square is the City Hall, a former neoclassical palace. Formerly it was called the Plaza de la Constitución, but in the 18th century the name was changed at the popular request.
Until 1986, he hosted the Provincial Department. In one of the cloisters of the building is the modernist mausoleum of the architect Luís Doménec Muntaner dedicated to King Jaime I. It consisted of a square surrounded by public buildings such as temples, the basilica and commercial premises, as well as sculptures dedicated to the most important characters of the city and the history of Rome. Only a part of the basilica has been preserved, a building with three naves that housed the court of justice and where the city council was occasionally also met. Passing a walkway, you can see a small part of Tarragona's urban plot, with some streets and houses.
Roman Theatre: Near the Forum, it was built in the time of Augustus. On one side of it was an artificial cave, with a tin. After a fire in the 3rd century AD stopped working. This is the only known Roman theater in Catalonia.
El Serrallo: It's the city's fisherman's neighborhood. The visit must be made until mid-afternoon, when fishermen return with their boats and the fish auction is made.
Conjunto Paleocristiano del Francolí: The old suburban area of Tarraco, near the Francolí River, became a late Roman necropolis that had its maximum growth in early Christian times.
A portion of the inscription was found in the frieze and the entire one in the attic. The original ledge has been restored and recovered. Due to its location and unmistakable shape, with simple and clear geometric decorations, it is one of the best-known monuments in Catalonia.
Tamarit Castle: On the right bank of the Galá River and near the sea, the castle remembers the reconquest of Campo de Tarragona. Built in 1363, it contains defensive and residency elements, with a prison, sightseeing towers, and a Romanesque church. Since 1681 it was owned by the Archbishop of Tarragona and the Marqueses of Tarragona, until in the early 20th century it was bought by an American art collector, who had it restored. The fisherman's town was depopulated in the 19th century because of the palous fevers generated in the area's swamp. Since 1950, it has been an addendum to Tarragona.
Centcelles Mausoleum: Great villa dedicated to the expansion of agricultural and livestock richnesses from the 4th century AD, one of its rooms became a mausoleum of an unknown high dignitary person who was believed to be Constant, son of Constantine the Great, but researchers believe that it was a brother of Tarraco. The dome of the living room is decorated with unique mosaics in gender and antiquity. The Christian themes of the New and Old Angels and profane themes and hunting scenes and scenes appear.

El Serrallo is the maritime neighborhood of Tarragona.
It originates in the late 18th-century, when the Junta d’Obres del Port projected its construction. Its narrow streets and simple buildings, most of them from the 19th century, give it the character of a typical seafaring enclave.
Next to the houses are the church of Sant Pere, from the 19th century and the work of Ramon Salas and Ricomà and the building of the Cofradía de Pesadores, built in 1925 by Antoni Pujol Sevil.
The life of many of its inhabitants is linked to the sea, and the same goes for the activity that takes place in it. At your market comes the fish that will be sold for the auction system.
The yacht supply trade and the various restaurants specializing in seafood are the economic engine of this Tarragonese enclave.
Some associations linked to the traditions of the city have their origin in the neighborhood, such as the Colla Castellera dels Xiquets del Serrallo or the co-fradía del Gremi dels Marejants.
