We renovated our great grandparents ‘house, built in 1860, in the traditional village of Aptera-Megala Chorafia, in distance just 13km away from Chania. The position of the village , makes Aptera ideal as a base for a lot of destinations.

The space
Villa Niki is a traditional stone built building which provides a fully equipped kitchen, a bedroom, living room, bathroom, energy fireplace, air-conditioning and washing machine. It has the capacity of hosting up to 5 people (1 double bed, sofa-bed, sofa). It provides internet access, smart TV and hi-fi.
In the two separate yards of Villa Niki you can rest under the shadow of the old bower, in absolute silence, read a book of our rich library, watching the magical view to White Mountains, surrounded by herbal plants and trees.
Villa Niki is situated 1km away from the main square of the village, in which you will find restaurants with traditional Cretan food, cafés and a mini market.
The archaeological site of ancient Aptera is situated 2km away. You will see remains of the Wall of the town(4th century BC) and also remains of the Cisterns, Baths and the recently excavated theatre, all monuments of the Roman Era. If you continue after the archaeological site, a walk in the Turkish castle offers a breathtaking view to the Suda Bay, Peninsula of Akrotiri and White Mountains.
The village is 5km away of the port of Suda, 25km away of the Airport of Chania and just 5 km away of the beaches of Kalives, Kiani Akti and Almyrida.
The whole region of Apokoronas offers unique excursions in traditional villages and walking tours in nature.

Where you’ll be

Aptera, Crete, Greece

Megala Chorafia / Aptera is a picturesque village built on a hilltop. It is surrounded by greenery and offers panoramic views of the White Mountains and the Aegean being just 11 km from the city of Chania.

The village developed in two cores: Around the junction that leads to some traditional villages of Apokoronas (Samonas Provarma, Pens, knives) and next to the ruins of the ancient city of Aptera (the ruins are spread on two hills).

While on holiday in Megala Chorafia you can go swimming or enjoy the sandy beaches of Kalyves (3 km) and Almirida (8 km). For food, you can try the traditional tavernas located in the first core. There is also a mini market.

Megala Chorafia village is in a very good spot to make excursions to the nearby villages of the Apokoronas region. Stylos you can sip a drink shady coffee automatically and Samonas to visit the church of St, Nicholas, with amazing frescoes. Admire uniquely wildflowers in Crete or walk in small canyons of the Apokoronas region. Megala Chorafia is next to the highway making it easy to access other areas of the island.

Regarding Aptera, it was one of the most important city-states of Crete. The first mention of the name of the city was found in Linear B plates (14th-13th century BC). The city flourished through the centuries until the 7th century AD where it was destroyed by an earthquake. The ideal position was crucial for the development of an important commercial and political center. Through ports Kissamos and Minoa, on both ends of the Gulf of Souda, the Aptera was able to control the naval activity. The city reached its peak of prosperity in the early Hellenistic period (end 4th- 3rd century BC).
