Unbeatable location

100% of guests in the past year gave this location a 5-star rating.
Enjoy the silence and beauty of NW Connecticut in this open, airy, wood and glass house. Located on 10 acres, this wooded retreat offers trails out your back door, and a peaceful country road past farms with cows, flowers and vegetables. The house is perfect for families or groups with 5 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, large common spaces with 2 stone fireplaces and soaring ceilings, and a chef's kitchen. Sunny nooks are scattered throughout the house. This is a book and nature lover's paradise!

The space
Our family has lived in this house for over 40 years. Originally built by a renowned Swedish architect for his own family, it features details and cozy corners. We made significant renovations to open the space and added bedrooms, a chef's kitchen with a huge island, and a screened-in porch with couch and chairs, small table and a swing. Four large connected rooms have ample space for a large groups to cook, play, eat and talk. A den has a fireplace, games and toys and opens to the screened in porch. Next is the kitchen: wood island, gas stove, double oven, dishwasher, fully stocked with pots, pans, tools, and equipment. Baking and cooking are a total joy here. Next is the dining room with a table for 8 and double doors that open to the brick patio and charcoal BBQ, outdoor table and chairs, and a fire pit. Finally, meet up with the rest of your group in the living room. The oversized room has comfy couches, a large fireplace, antique rugs, lots of great books and a game shelf. From the living room a hall leads to the back bedrooms (3 bedrooms, 2 full BA), upstairs (2 more BR, full BA), downstairs to laundry (brand new W/D), or out the doors to either giant stone steps to the car park or to the side yard where everyone can play on the mostly level lawn. With woods beyond the lawn, the house feels a million miles away!

Guest access
The whole house is available: bedrooms, living space, outdoor areas. Main entrance is up a flight of stairs, or up rustic rock steps.

Other things to note
This house is our own space, with normal rural qualities. It is clean, and well appointed, but it is not a hotel and we ask that our guests treat the space with respect. That includes cleaning before they go (doing dishes, cleaning messes), straightening up (books, toys, etc), and returning furniture and other items to their original places. Please notify us if anything is broken or needs attention.

This is a rural location, and no other houses are visible from this property, but there are neighbors who can hear outside noises. Please be respectful. Like all rural places, there is weather, tripping hazzards, and flora and fauna, and guests are responsible for their own safety.

Neighbourhood highlights

Start by walking on the road, then grab your mountain bike (or rent an e-bike!) for tackling the hills. In summer, you can raft or fly fish on the Housatonic River or take a dip in the local lake, or take a horseback riding lesson at two different stables nearby. Two public tennis courts are in the Village next to a farmers market, charming library and playground. Drive a few minutes for adorable shops in classic New England towns or tackle sections of the Appalachian Trail. There are local must-see spots: Kent Falls, the Covered Bridge, the historic iron works. Drive for 30 minutes and visit Tanglewood and Lenox museums, the Sharon Playhouse or Music Mountain. Farmers markets, antique stores and good restaurants abound! Ask us for advice about anything.

We are a sister team who own this house together. Our parents bought it in 1980, and we grew up here on weekends (we were New Yorkers during the week) exploring the woods, gardening (mostly weeds), and cooking up holiday diners together. Although all three of us have traveled all over the world at various times for fun and work, we love coming home to the NW corner of CT. Professionally, we cover the arts, nursing, education, teaching, grant writing, landlord and more. We have 4 kids among us who are currently between 7 and 15. At least one of us speaks Spanish, French, German and a bit of Russian.
