At a time when many are having to self-isolate themselves to avoid spreading the corona virus, we offer guests our beautiful restored farmhouse as refuge situated in a peaceful valley away from the threat of public interaction yet only one hour equidistant from Florence, Siena and Pisa - ideal if you need time to write, paint,or compose music until the epidemic subsides.

The space
Casa Quintino accommodates 7 people comfortably in three large (4x4m) rooms. All beds have new anti allergic 'memory foam' mattresses, and fresh linen. We have central heating for winter stays and in summer the rooms are cooled with ceiling fans. Mosquito netting on all windows make for a sound sleep in the velvet silence of a Tuscan night.

It is pure magic. Views from all rooms are magnificent over the rolling hills to Volterra. We back onto a mountain of forest, so deer and wild boar are common whilst porcupines, pine martins and fox visit at night. One week in June the valley lights up with fireflies, and in summer we are visited by Africa Hoopoes.

We have a small splash pool to cool off in the garden, mainly for kids to enjoy and a 'hog wallow' which is a natural mineral spring. Chill out with a good book and bottle of local wine under the gazebo in a magic circle of cypresses.

Guest access
Guests have their own entrance and parking and can access the whole property with extensive lawns and olive grove. The grounds merge into fields and forests without any fences so visitors can walk in every direction without restriction.
Casa Quintino is rented to only one group at a time, so you can have the whole property with no shared space or garden with other guests. The owners are not in residence.

Other things to note
Quintino is at the end of a gravel farm road but most hire cars (and their drivers) manage it without problem. It is graded each year but it is bumpy. There are no street lights but the house itself and surrounds are well lit .

We are 20 minutes from nearest shops in Gambassi Terme for provisions so all food should be purchased before arrival. Stock up and then relax.

Casa Quintino is not ideal for toddlers, elderly, infirm or disabled, as there are uneven surfaces, banks and stairs. Children must be supervised at all times. We have a childs cot and high chair available.

The house is perfect for true nature lovers who enjoy rural living. If you are expecting an insect free sterile environment then Quintino is not for you.

Location

Gambassi Terme, Tuscany, Italy

Although we live in the heart of an unspoiled valley we are only 25 minutes from some of the most beautiful hill top towns in Tuscany.

San Gimignano with is medieval towers, and Volterra the capital of the Etruscan Civilisation which has a Roman amphitheater are the most well known local sites, but there as lessor know gems such as Certaldo, Montecatini and Monteriggioni.

We are one hour by car equidistant from the cities of Siena, Florence and Pisa, in the heart of the Cultural Triangle of Italy.

Lucca is only two hours away with summer Music festivals which include many rockstar legends. The famous Andrea Boccelli gives his annual concert at Laiatico in August which is just down the road.

Opera in San Gimignano and Jazz in Volterra are also regular summer attractions.

The last two weekends of August are the Medieval festival in Volterra which is a must especially for kids.

The world famous Pallio in Siena is a stunning cultural experience in July and August.

The sea is only an hour away at Cecina and long sandy beaches of Popolonia are within reach for a day trip as is the beautiful island of Elba.

We are the owners of Casa Quintino, which we brought as a complete ruin in 1989. Over the last 30 years we have renovated it to become the beautiful Rufugio it now is and from where we were hoping to arrange walking tours along the Pilgrim Route in Italy. We both grew up in Southern Africa and have spent most of our lives living in various countries in Africa, running a Charity which we started in 2019, called Africa AHEAD, which helps rural women improve their living standards. In 2015, we had just retired to Cape Town when our home was destroyed by wild fires. By 2017 we had managed to rebuild again as Phoenix Rising rose from the ashes, but to help pay for the new mortgage we decided to run an airbnb and open our new home to guests. However, all these plans are on hold with the dreadful Corona pandemic and we await to see if life will return to normal in the coming months.
