Perched high on the third floor of the manor, the Canary Room beams with a sunny radiance. No one can resist feeling a little more chipper when walking into the room! Room size: 21'x15'.

The space

this private manor turned Bed & Breakfast was originally built and owned by the world renowned businessman Colonel Albanus Phillips Jr. of the famous Phillips Packing Company. Completed in 1903 and added on to for the next several years, this ten bedroom house was built as a Queen Anne Victorian integrating Italian Renaissance and Edwardian features and is lavishly adorned with colonnades and massive wood accents. Italian marble enhances the beauty of the interior and exterior, including three types of marble on the front porch alone. Marble slabs, 8” thick and 18” deep, were used on the windows, both on the sills and the lintels, even on the lower level windows. The exterior brick of the house was imported from Venice, Italy.

The home has been visited by many famous guests including the President Teddy Roosevelt in 1908 and his nephew, President Franklin D. Roosevelt on his trip to Cambridge in 1935 to dedicate the new bridge between Dorchester and Talbot County. Today, the home serves as a Bed & Breakfast in this historic West End of Cambridge in the "Heart of the Chesapeake," Dorchester County.

There isn't much good to say here other than our arrival was well coordinated. Here are the facts: 1. The house was for sale. 2. There were no lights on. 3. While we attempted to get our gear in the house, the host was more interested in keeping the door closed than assisting us. 4. We we assigned to a room on the third floor that was oppressively hot, which took until the next day to get cool. 5. We learned that we would be sharing a bathroom which had not been mentioned in the listing. For a home not in a major destination location priced at $160 without a private bath was unreasonable based on comparables. 6. When we asked for a room with a private bathroom, none was available. 7. In an extremely unusual move, we were required to turn our key to the room into a brown box if we left the premises and could only retain the key if we were in our room. The Brown box was unmanned and unwatched and it was easy for any of the other guests to obtain our key, gain access to our room with the knowledge that we were not on the premises. 8 The fan in the room sounded like a 1950's vacuum cleaner turning on and did so for 15 seconds every 45 minutes making sleep difficult (not to mention that there sounded like there were animals in the attic above us). 9. The rooms were not soundproof and we found ourselves overhearing the neighbors bathroom activities 10 the landscape was overgrown 11 the common areas were unlit and unwelcoming such that we spent 4 hours at a local restaurant working on our computers since it was not possible to do so at the bed and breakfast 12 the bedroom did not have wifi or a tv and we had to scavenge for toilet paper from another bathroom during our stay. 13 The home has a great history and the host was an excellent storyteller, but he was not attentive to the comfort of his guests including a failure to offer breakfast on the third morning we were there (and a failure to respond to doorbells when we accidentally became locked out at 8 in the morning).

Response from James:
It is our goal at the Albanus Phillips Inn, to always please our guests with the best service possible. This residence was built without limitation on expense and is clearly a fortress offering well established quiet through out. The lights through out the first floor, the dining room, the foyers and the parlours are turned on at 6:30 am when I unlock the front doors and start preparing a gourmet breakfast. The chef arrives each day at 6:45 am and was preparing the breakfast on the day they departed, serving all guests always between 8 and 10 am There were not have been any concern about being locked out because the doors were unlocked. I always have persons available to assist with luggage at normal check-in times, I cannot assist myself because of a handicap.. When the reservation was made Airbnb, in their listing, has already notified the third floor guests that the Canary and Fleur de Lis Rooms have a shared bath, the reason for reduced rates on those rooms. Messages are always sent to guests an the time of booking reiterating the shared bathrooms for those two rooms. When guests arrive wifi information and the password are given to all guests before they go up to their rooms. TV's are not in these two rooms but in several sitting rooms located on each floor of the B and B. Four hours prior to arrival the thermostats in the rooms are set on 74 degrees and the rooms cool down within fifteen minutes with the most expensive equipment that Carrier manufactures, which includes fresh air intake in each zone. There are seven HVAC units. There are twelve zones in this dwelling for the twenty four rooms. They are shown how to make it warmer or cooler on the thermostats. All room keys are placed in a metal key box in the kitchen when the guests are out and about. There is always a person monitoring the box in that room during the day and it allows management to know at the end of the day that all guests have returned and then the doors are locked for the evening. Toiletries are abundantly available in the bathrooms and extra is located in each room. Extra toilet tissue is always easily visible in each restroom. Weather permitting, the grounds are maintained by landscapers. There are three B and B's in Cambridge for Sale and two hotels. Our guests always receive the best possible service, which is not in any way affected by the potential Sale. In fact, the potential Sale keeps us more on our toes and forces an even greater effort in our presentation to the public. Our Realtor thought it might turn a guest into a potential purchaser. I have always served the public for over 40 years and I welcome honest and sincere reviews. It helps us to improve. While we cannot please everyone, we sure do try to make our guests enjoy their experience here. We have been blessed with travelers from the four corners of the world and keep friendly continuing dialogues with many who wish to return in the future.

James is an incredible host who made us feel very welcome in his home. The Inn is filled with amazing period pieces and vintage hardware which we really enjoyed seeing. There was smoking on the back deck which did enter into the Inn. People with sensitivities might want to ask about this in advance. The Inn is right around the corner from the High Spot, a fantastic farm to table restaurant.

We absolutely loved this place. The house is steeped in history and the owner, James, knows the history intimately and shares it generously with guests. The bedrooms are magnificent, beautifully decorated, warm and inviting. The bathrooms are positively luxurious. All the rooms are spacious, grand and elegant. The whole house feels like it's taken out of a scene from Downton Abbey. James is extremely helpful and accommodating. He knew that we were traveling for my birthday and had cake waiting for me when we arrived; it was a great surprise. He indulged our many questions about the house's history and provided great tips for activities in the area. The cook prepared a wonderful, large breakfast in the morning when we came down. This is truly a special place. We will definitely stay there again and have already recommended it to friends and family.
