This traditional Bali house is part of a multi-generational Balinese compound that is rarely experienced by visitors. You will be part of the vivid, gregarious and humble community life that is the REAL Bali. Wayan and her family will share their culture, traditions, history and religion with you in an open and humble way that is very, very special. You will become a part of their big and loving family. The compound houses 4 generations of Wayan’s husband’s family each in their own separate sections moving to the rhythm of their daily chores, interests and routines.

The family temple lies just beyond the garden of your mini house and is the center of the spiritual life of the family. Take part in the daily offerings or the larger ceremonies to appreciate the importance of rituals and ancestors. Pets and animals are a big part of the compound. In their own separate area in the back of the compound are the family’s livestock, chickens and pigs.

The rice terraces of Tegalalang lie to the back of the compound as do 2 rivers. Daily walks through the rice terraces at sunrise and sunset are incredibly beautiful as the herons wing their way to their roosting grounds in the next village over. Or join the village children as they splash about.

Beautiful balcony for enjoying the greenery and sky. Fun to watch birds, butterflies and an occasional firefly in the evenings. Ceiling fan for cooling the room, though mosquito netting blocks the air flow. Good size outdoor kitchen with fridge makes meal prep easy to do. Livestock on property, and the roosters don't care what time of day it is, they like to keep their hens in line with crowing. Fun to see chickens on top of the roof in the mornings. Quiet little town, about 15 minute drive into Ubud. Store out front has the basics and even ice cream when you need a 'fix.' Host family is very kind and warm to their guest, language barrier knows no limits when smiles are involved.

My family stayed here in Kas Komala for 2 months (two adults and three children). We loved the tropical indoor/outdoor living, where your living room and kitchen are covered, but are open to the outside. Only the bedrooms with bathrooms are enclosed. So, eating meals at the table or just lounging is full of fresh tropical breezes and a view of papaya, jackfruit, and coconut trees. When it rains, the smell that blows through is indescribable. We felt so connected to the elements and healthier than at home. Kas Komala is the upper floor of a family home. Downstairs lives Kadek, the young man that will help you find everything you need, like taxi and laundry services. When you live here, you are treated as part of the family, and you get a real taste of the daily life of Balinese people. Just adjacent to Kas Komala is the family's small farm. Every morning the grandma lights her open cook fire so it gets a little smoky, the roosters crow which you do get used to and even fond of, and the pigs are fed which can get quite loud, but our kids slept right through everything. The roosters continue most of the day, the tropical birdsong was amazing, huge butterflies visited the flowering trees, and at dusk you hear the Tokay gecko and the whirring of crickets. I loved the natural soundscape, and is woven into all of my memories of this place. One of my favorite things about Kas Komala was the small store and warung downstairs, near the front of the family compound. It gave us the opportunity to buy the papayas that we saw growing, the local vegetables, fruits, homemade tofu and Tempeh fresh that day, as well as other basics like toilet paper, water, milk, bread, coconut oil for cooking, and treats like candy or ice cream for the kids. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes to drive to Ubud, and costs about 150,000 rupiah for a round trip. There is a good warung or restaurant walking distance from home, and pizza delivery from Pizza Bagus.

Very nice place Very helpful people Real Bali home If you don't care about the 5:00 a.m rooster start crowing is ok. The place is beautiful the only problem is the location is far away from ubud . No taxi . Because we travel with kids is difficult for us if the place doesn't have good location. They offer you a driver he can drive you to ubud or the beach . Or wherever you want to go. The driver is not cheap but is convenient.

We felt very welcome by Wayan she was a great host and fed us food cooked with love. There is plenty of room to stretch out and make your self at home. She was very attentive to our needs regarding cleaning and transpiration every day. The neighborhood is a short drive from Ubud.

We originally booked for three nights at Kas Komala, but so enjoyed our time that we extended our visit. Wayan is a wonderful person and excellent host, and the rooms she and her family have built are clean, spacious and comfortable. There are lots of animals in the family compound, and beautiful rice paddies all around. There are places to eat at a range of prices in the village, and it is not far from Ubud. Wayan and her whole family were so welcoming, and very tolerant of our two children. We highly recommend the breakfast, which is an optional extra, but Wayan is a wonderful cook and this was a great way to start the day. The kids particularly appreciated the traditional Balinese desserts each morning. The family went out of their way to make us welcome and to show us around. They even prepared a delicious traditional Balinese meal for us. We were very spoiled. Definitely recommend Kas Komala to others.

Jacques and Anita look after the airbnb bookings on behalf of the Balinese hosts of this apartment. From the beginning, Jacques gave me lots of good and reliable information about the immediate area and Ubud. This was important for me as it was my first time here. He was always quick to reply (within one hour) to any questions I had. He also arranged my airport pick up with a taxi driver who was trustworthy and could speak English well. My flight was delayed and the driver needed to hang around at the airport until 2 am in the morning - very appreciated. I stayed at Wayan's house for one month. The room was clean, the water was, hot, the bed was comfortable and the kitchen had everything I needed. Also, importantly, the wifi is strong, unlimited and included in price. There are two rooms with bathrooms available, both with queensize beds and mosquito canopies. The area is the perfect distance from Ubud - about 15 minute pleasurable scooter or taxi ride. I rented a scooter for the month from Wayan for less than $3 a day! I liked to go to Ubud for shopping, check out the palace and the monkeys etc, or to go to a cafe/restaurant with friends and then I liked to get the hell out of there. Ubud is busy and the footpaths and roads are clogged almost all the time. It's wall to wall tourists. Wayan's is a haven to come back to. It is also a perfect distance from the area around Tegalalang - about 15 mins or so. I rode up through and around Tegalalang many times. Late afternoon or early morning is the best time. Beautiful roads that wind through jungle, miles of rice terraces, and quiet villages, temples, shrines, artisans doing woodwork etc..Lots to explore and lots of happy, local Balinese people who love to interact with you. Still, personally, the highlight for me was seeing traditional Balinese family culture up close. The apartment is right in the middle of a Gedong compound, where all the members of the same extended family live. From the grandparents down to the young children, they live together happily, with all contributing in some way to the strong spiritual thread that runs through their daily activities. It was an eye-opening, learning experience - not just a vacation. Wayan's younger brother, Kadek lived directly underneath and checked on me daily. He was always eager to make sure I was happy and quick to address any issues I had. Wayan lives just a few houses away and also made regular visits, as did some of her relatives. Wayan and Kadek's father and mother were also very attentive, and although they do not speak English, they were always quick to offer a smile and teach me a phrase or two in Indonesian. All in all, the whole experience was a joy. Thank you, Wayan and thank you, Kadek!
