The space
This luxury apartment is located in the heart of the the historical centre of Monopoli, and is surrounded by bars and restaurants. Monopoli is a thriving fishing port where trawlers arrive daily with their fresh catch and fishermen sit in the ancient port untangling their nets. There are an abundance of excellent restaurants and trattorias serving fresh seafood, fish and typical Puglian dishes and cocktail bars, perfect for aperififs. Fresh fish, fruit and veg are sold in the local shops. Within 200 metres of the apartment is a small sandy beach where you can swim in the shade of the ancient city walls in crystal clear sea. From here, the coast is littered with idyllic sandy coves until it flattens out into long stretches of sandy beach. Here you will find Capitolo (20 mins drive) with its sophisticated lidos where you can hire sunbeds and beach umbrellas, sip cocktails at sunset and dance till dawn.

This large, bright, airy apartment is on the top floor of an early 19th century, stone built 'palazzo', and was sympathetically restored by the current owners, using the skills of local craftsman. There are two large double bedrooms, one with en suite shower room, and a further bathr There is a large dining kitchen and a comfortable sitting room with a small tv and wifi. The master bedroom and kitchen have French doors leading onto the large, private roof terrace with shaded dining area and views of the cathedral and rooftops of the old town. There is a communal roof terrace with sea views above the apartment. There is air conditioning in the 2 bedrooms and central heating for the colder months.

Puglia is renowned for its agricultural produce and its gastrononic specialities. Much of Italy's olive oil and wine is produced here. It is easy to get off the beaten track and follow desserted countryroads meandering through olive groves and vineyards divided by dry stone walls and scattered with 'trulli' - the unique cone shaped dwellings and 'masserie' - the country estates, some of which are fortified. The quaint white towns of Ostuni, Locorotondo and Cisternino are just a short drive or bus ride away as is Alberobello the UNESCO site and trulli capital. Lecce, often described as the 'Florence of the South', with its wealth of baroque architecture, is just over an hour's drive or easily accessed by train. Matera known for it's dramatic ravine & rock dwellings, and made more famous byu 007 rock is just over an hour's drive away.

The beauty of this apartment is you can leave the car at home and have a lazy holiday beakfasting in the local bars alongside the fisherman and local business people, reading on the terrace and taking regular dips in the sea - reached in less than 5 minutes through the narrow shady streets. Or you can stroll or cycle along the coast to spend the day in your favorite cove with a picnic lunch or freshly cooked pasta in one of the breach bars. Evenings can be spent meandering through quaint streets and dining in one of the squares. If you are feeling more adventurous. you can hire a car or negotiate local transport to explore Puglia's many historic towns of the region, each with their own gastrononic delights.
