Riomaggiore, first among the 5 pearls of the Ligurian Sea, dates back to the 13th century when a group of Greek refugees, to escape the persecutions of Emperor Leo III, landed on the tip of Montenero and settled in the ridge area. Then, around the year 1000, they gradually descended into the sea and originated the marina neighborhood. Then, when Riomaggiore was ceded to the Republic of Genoa, there was a period of economic growth that allowed us to strengthen viticulture, giving rise to the famous terraces that still characterize these territories.

Right between the sea and the terraces, sports activities are carried out in the 5 terre; in fact, there is a dense network of trails ideal for hiking with different degrees of difficulty, but all really very scenic, with breathtaking views. In addition to hiking, in the Cinque Terre you can dive (diving and snorkeling) sports in the sea and inland streams such as canoeing in the sea, or rafting and kayaking in the streams of nearby Val di Vara.
