The space
As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s protected Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, the Elgin Valley has two distinct advantages – it is only an hour outside of the city of Cape Town and, more importantly, it is not as busy and crowded as other places in the Western Cape. With these benefits, it is no wonder the Elgin Valley is a popular getaway destination for those travellers that need to rejuvenate mind and body. As the Elgin Valley is located within the Kogelberg Reserve, everything here is very much dedicated to being outdoors. The list of things to do is appropriately long and endless with visitors able to enjoy mountain biking, bird watching, bass and trout fishing, kloofing, hiking, fly-fishing and much more. The scenery in the area is nothing short of spectacular with a dazzling array of colours perfectly complementing the scintillating kaleidoscope of landscapes, hills, valleys, trees, grasses, and mountain ranges. With numerous private nature reserves found in Elgin, visitors can enjoy the numerous wonders and pleasures of Mother Nature at their own pace in their own way. For the wine connoisseur in you, the Elgin Valley is also part of the sumptuous Four Passes Fruit Route, which is prominent for its roses, fruit trees, and cool-climate wines. Furthermore, along with Grabouw, Villiersdorp, Houw Hoek, and Bot Rivier, Elgin Valley has formed the world’s first biodiversity wine route where you can not only sample delicious bouquets of wine, but you can also appreciate the hectares of protected fynbos.
