If you’re awed by natural beauty, you won’t be disappointed. This casita is off the beaten track with full views of the San Simon Valley. The property backs onto the Chiricahua Wilderness Area so you can go birding, hiking, or exploring right out your door, or alternatively, just hang out in the hammock. Wildlife is abundant and no shortage of birds in the spring. The sunrise will inspire you to get up early and you’ll want to be home for the sunsets. The casita is a 30 minute drive from Portal.

The space
The one-bedroom Casita is cozy and private. As your host, I will be staying in the main house when you’re here so if you forget or need something (e.g. spices, oil, toothpaste, toothbrush, a margarita) you’re welcome to come over and get supplies. The Casita is separate from the main house and completely self-contained. If you prefer privacy on your vacation, you’ll have it. A full deck and super comfortable outdoor chairs make spending time outside in your surroundings magical.
The Casita has a fully equipped kitchen, full bath with tub, laundry, and living area with views of nature. A wood stove and wall heaters in the bathroom and bedroom will keep you warm on cooler nights. This part of Arizona isn’t close to a large urban center, so you will want to come with groceries. The Sky Island Grocery and Grill is the closest store and can supply all your food basics.
Part of the road up to the casita is rough and you should drive a higher clearance vehicle like a SUV; a car could be damaged. I also recommend arriving during daylight hours since it is off the beaten track and it can be daunting to come in the dark. There is about 5 miles of gravel road, most of it is pretty decent, about 3/4 of a mile is rough.

Where you’ll be

Portal, Arizona, United States

There is an abundance of natural and human history in this part of Arizona. Its pretty low key, and you're likely to see more wildlife than people. There is a great little grocery/restaurant between Rodeo and Portal and the closest gas is in Animas NM.
